Activision-Blizzard is holding a game competition where the winner will
receive $100,000. Rather than submit a completed game you need to
submit a two-page summary and a video describing your game idea. There
are NDAs involved, so this doesn't look like another contest where the
corporate sponsor lays claim to all materials submitted.

This looks like a great opportunity, especially if you're working on a
game prototype or at least have a design for a game swimming around in
your head.

Here is the Joystiq article about the contest:

And the initial PDF announcement available on Activision Blizzard's site:

"Yes, we currently plan to release some mod tools for Modern Warfare 2 for PC in the future. No eta or date has been set on when you can expect them however. Other than that, there hasn't been much movement on them. If this progresses, I'll let you know."

Thursday 26-Nov-2009 12:57 PM Final Fantasy house preparing for shift to server-based games, says boss

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada says his company is prepared for the death of physical, disc-based console games, which he predicts will have happened within ten years.

Speaking to MCV, Wada said format holders like Sony and Microsoft are already prepared for the death of traditional console games - and games publishers must catch up too.

"In ten years' time a lot of what we call 'console games' won't exist," he said.

Wada warned that "all the distributors and sales firms will suffer a big negative impact" from a new era in which games switch from discs to server-based offerings, game streaming and digital distribution.

"Somewhere around 2005 the console manufacturers' strategy shifted," he said.
"In the past the platform was hardware, but it has switched to the network. A time will come when the hardware isn't even needed anymore.

"With that, any kind of terminal becomes a potential platform on which games can be played - that's exponential growth in the potential of gaming. The potential size of the market is enormous."

Wada explained that Square Enix is preparing for this change by boosting production of social and browser games in Japan, and also closely watching next year's Final Fantasy XIV beta.

"Social and browser games are going to grow dramatically - especially in areas like Asia which does not have as big a console market," he said.

This afternoon, during a live BASH episode, who should turn up but Infinity Wards community manager: 402.

A number of questions were put forward, including the dedi server question. Rob "fourzerotwo" Bowling replied:

Quote:
no - dedi servers will not be available. Multiplayer will run through a "IWNet" and servers will not be available for purchase. Listen servers only.

Furthermore, Bowling also confirmed that PunkBuster will not be supported, alternatively using the Valve Anti-Cheat (or VAC) system.

"It's not easy keeping things secret, especially when you have this many people working on it...

'Chinese Noodles' gave MW2blog the heads up on pictures giving us the behind the scenes look at the toy factory creating the Night Vision Goggles for Modern Warfare 2's Prestige Edition."

"Recently a worker in a Chinese toy factory happened to recognize that what they are producing is the Modern Warfare 2 Night Vision Goggles which will come with the Prestige Edition of Modern Warfare 2. Being a Call of Duty fan himself he decided to take a few snaps."

This is more a general gaming topic, but a very interesting reading for someone who's just new to the whole portaling and bsp technique. Recommended. Just bear in mind that Call of Duty is not mentioned, but still use comparable technique for creating the maps.

Warning: The following 2,400 words attempt to take very complex 3D rendering problems and reduce them to simple language so that you can peer into the polygon-based sausage factory that is the videogame industry. I’m not sure if I pulled it off.

Yesterday I promised a writeup on “BSP technology”. Except, I was using BSP the sloppy way to mean “general level-optimizing type stuff”, which is not really correct. BSP is a technique of level optimization. What I should have said is “how BSP technology is being marginalized in favor of other optimization techniques”. BSP stands for “Binary Space Partitioning”, which is obtuse programmer talk for “dividing space in two”. We love doing that because it lets us pretend our dull technical skills are a potent form of arcane magic. It’s the same reason we “launch applications” instead of just “running programs” like you simple folk.
