There is no default size for mps they are as big or small as you make them I did read somewhere that the default download size from a server is like 12mb so if the player has not set there game to let them download bigger files they will not get a map above 12mb.
I did see a post on the web were someone wanted help with BUILDCUBEMAPS so I ran my map and when it started I typed in the console BUILDCUBEMAPS and the screen flashed with all the textures for a bit then I got back in the map and did not see no change but I think this is more for reflective textures.
It is some think I have to look in to but 1 thing I did find was my map went from 3.86MB down to 3.45MB not sure if it will help the FPS like I said something we have to look in to.
Hope all this is some help and a easy way to reduce your BSP size a bit and maybe give your FPS a boost.

Like he said, there is no standard, but I noticed that the bsp sizes are a lot bigger than theywere in regular cs. I made a small arena map with hardly anything in it and it was 8 megs. I just finished my 1st defuse map and it was 16 megs.

Buildcubemaps is strictly to make the reflextions and lighting transitions noticable in each area.

[J5]EMPEROR just wanted to ask did you use a lot of displacement textures in your map as I just run a quick test as a lot of people make the nodraw brush all displacement and that make it large in file size.
Brush 512x512x128 all displacement = 954KB
Just the top that the player will see 512x512x128 =212KB
It is just 16MB seems a bit big or is your map a huge map. I have just downloaded a remake of a sp map d1_canals_13 and that is 11.5mb and that is a large map with a lot of displacement textures in it just interested that is all

It's a med/big map. Yes I used a lot of displacement brushes and that seems to be athe factor in huge compile times and large bsp sizes.
