There may be multiple ways of doing it.

This one worked for me.
won't hurt to try.

[lol]
lol......
I think your making the file right...its just not in the right spot.

make sure the iwi is in your .iwd and put it in your mods/mp-usermaps folder.

if your loadscreen is working then your minimap iwi file should be right below it.

also..you have compiled your map again once you made the iwi file and updated your .csv and .gsc files? (just asking)

This is from the compile in the asset manager. Is that right or did it error?

Code:
Converting 1 assets, reason: 'missing cache entry'
 Converting 'comapss_map_mp_duckblind' (material 2 of 1)...
Converting 1 assets, reason: 'missing cache entry'
Converting 'comapss_map_mp_duckblind' (material 2 of 1)...

Conversion done. Hit key to continue.

that error always shows up afther doing that.
now all u have to do is go to
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War\raw\images
find your .iwi file

In '[root]/raw/images/' a new image has appeared, called 'compass_map_mapname.iwi'.
Copy this into your mapname.iwd, in the images directory.

Now go to '[root]/raw/maps/mp/mapname.gsc' and open it using Notepad (if it doesn't yet exists, copy one from an existing map, and rename that map's name to your map name) and add the following (or modify) lines:

maps\mp\_compass::setupMiniMap("compass_map_mapname");

setdvar("compassmaxrange","2000");

The compassmaxrange value should be changed to what you like.
The lower the number, the shorter the minimap's range, but the more precise.
Now, in the CoD5 Compile Tools program, you select your map and update your zone file. can be found here
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War\zone_source
Add this line:
material,compass_map_mapname
Now you should finalise your map and run it your map and run it.
The compass should now work.

what about this step:

6. Create a folder named images on your desktop, place a COPY of the compass_map_mp_mapname.iwi into this folder.
Zip this folder, DO NOT USE RAR, click the zip & name it mp_mapname.iwd..

is that what you really do and after I do that I put that file here
right

C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War\mods\mp_usermaps

or here

C:\Documents and Settings\rtahelp\Local Settings\Application Data\Activision\CoDWaW\mods\mp_usermaps

yes the part that you pointed out is if you dont have a iwd
any folder in mods you, named "usermaps works" just need to select it in launcher
put your images folder with both your IWI
in that mod folder
#1 go to your your launcher,
#2 tick Mod Builder,
#3 select your mod folder
#4 tick only the images folder and the 2 IWI
#5 tick Build IWD File
#6 tick build mod

you should now have a IWD, made buy the tools, in the mod folder you put the IWI 's in
it will be the same folder set up with IWI's in the right place
inside your new IWD
