is it possible to create flickering lights, and, will they alter the lighting of their affected vicinity? like, say, a light that is short circuiting? or a flourescent bulb?

would the flickering light be an animation?

just trolling for ideas here...

thanks!

hi gr33nman,

i was playing around during the last wekks in search of a special light solution (glowing textures) when i found something that could help you maybe:
you need a shader with the stage keyword "rgbGen wave...". this will make the shaded surface blink. unfortunately it will not enlight the surrounding but maybe it's helpful enough for you.
have a look at shadertypes\world\metal_objective.stype in your pak4.pk3.
when you name your texture like "metal_objective@yourtexturename.jpg" it will behave "blinking".
if you need more detailed information about the shaders feel free to ask or have a deep look at the shader manual at Shaderlab.
it's not fully usable for cod but most of it will work.

Cheers

you can also simply create a small .efx file that emits light, and have it play repeatedly at a random interval

i will post up a small sample map this weekend

Please do..

I've been looking for something like this. I want to make torches for a map I'm working on. And they look like s**t without proper flickering lights.

well...if it is just torches, take a look at the resizing fx tutorial....resize the tinybon fire effect to the size of your torch...i believe it casts a light as well [angryalien]

I already did that. I've made an effect called "torchfire" and it looks decent.. however it doesn't emmit (much?) light. And it doesn't cast the "flickering" I'd like on the walls.

Caretaker,

From what I know of the lights ingame, with this engine/version of CoD you can't get flickering effects from fire. If you look at all of the stock maps that have fire in them you will notice that there is virtually no light from them - they are just an effect.

What I did with my fireplace to "simulate" the glow was to put a light right above the fire and colored it the way that I wanted to get the color of the flame reflecting off of the walls. It still will not flicker as the lighting is done at compile time and they are all static.

NOTE: I don't claim to know all about this but I've learned quite a bit and feel comfortable replying knowing full well that if I am incorrect in any of it, someone will step in.

that is my thinking as well. you'd need dynamic/realtime lighting and i don't think the q3 engine has that. effects yes, realtime, no...

however, i'm still very much interested in the efx stryder is going to post.

I did this too, but it just didn't look "real" to me, to have a constant light source from a flickering fire.

Hopefully StrYdeRs example will work. Can't wait to check it out and see if it will work. :D

ok....here is a sample map using fx for dynamic lighting

a slight modification to the time and delay between firing the effect (to a random) will create your flickering light

i was going to make one and it was brought to my attention that Valoche had already created one, so download it today [angryalien]
