Plan:

OK So after seeing that there are people making money from dvds of "how to fix the RROD issues" I got a bit angry. My xbox has had the RROD for a year now and as I have not even wanted to play it I thought I'd have a go at fixing the RROD myself and if it works or not put up a video or step by step picture and video/audio guide on how to (or not) do it.

If this fix works it means the RROD issue is completely fixed for ever (unless you put your xbox in a fire..).

I am aware of some Free videos on the net but they seem incomplete with video editing being done so that your not sure if the Xbox 360 they were working on is the same one that's working at the end of the video.

Why would my guide be any different? How would people believe it?

I've been here for more than 4 years and certainly would not want to ruin others 360s with some kinda dodgy tutorial and have my account deleted.

-- --
What kind of guide will it be?

This is difficult as I did not get any high-tech video cameras for Christmas...

I do have a high quality webcam with zoom functions etc and recording ability.

I have several good microphones for audio recording.

I have a decent digital camera for clear close up photos.
-- --

So from that I will probably record audio and video at the same time plus I'll take pictures (which I can overlay more instruction on) and have those pictures edited into the recording.
-- --

Equipment:

1 x Xbox 360 with RROD

1 x Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound Thermal paste 3.5gram

1 x Arctic Silver ArctiClean 30ml Thermal material remover and thermal surface purifier pack

Infinite paper towls, screw drivers and other poking devices.
-- --

I am waiting for my order of Arctic Silver at the moment so in the mean time is there anything that I have forgotten or any suggestions?

Not all rrod related problems are heat, a lot are chip failures or damaged components, these things can not be fixed by applying a thermal compound to the heatsink. Do you know the cause or are you just assuming it's overheating?

I myself have had 2 rrod on two different consoles, one was a board failure (some sort of chip burned out) and the other a disk drive failure (which i fixed by replacing the drive).

Though i hope you get it fixed, so annoying when you chuck in your fave game to find a lovely selection of red lights staring back at you.

I am assuming my RROD is the most common where the insufficient compound used on the cpu and gpu have heated beyond their tolerance and have caused cracking/drying so when the motherboard flexes with heat the gpu and or cpu have been pushed upwards away from the board.

Arctic Silver (from user reviews) seems to have a 50% decrease in heat.

I am prepared to buy a new 360 if this does not work. And then when that overheats, try it again.

If however the overheating has caused other issues like board failure then I will do my best to look for tell tale signs in order for others to watch out for them.

Other things like CD drive failures I can fix with the use of spare ones.

Also I am in the knowledge that others have tried this to no success. That's why I am researching it heavily to make sure every thing I do is correct.

--- Just has a note before anyone posts it, no DO NOT use the towel trick, you are simply allowing the cpu/gpu to lower back to the board which does not fix the issue, it prolongs it and damages your xbox further.
