ok folks im starting on my first map ever. new to mapping now i got foylemans video on how to make a small building. for waw my question is on my Terrain for outside how big should i make the whole map . like his building was 512x512 well what size should i make all the terrain. should i make it in patches little at a time?

For large maps with open terrain I use a 15 x 15 mesh that covers a 1024 unit square. For more detailed areas I half that or adjust as I think might be needed.

It might be simpler for you and visually less confusing if you keep your terrain grid the same as your 2d grid. A 512x512 patch would have a terrain density of 7x7 and a 1024x1024 would have a terrain density of 17x17. The downside of doing this is that your terrain will have less detail.

I agree. For a small map you should only have the terrain as large as one of the blue squares in the 2D view.

well i glanced at the sample maps bessie and payload. in radiant an i seen they just made very very small terrain patches. for the terrain cause i can click one an remove them. im sure i will be here asking some questions on what i cant find in the tut section

Make sure you don't put any terrain under buildings where it won't be seen by the player. The reason being is that the game will draw any surface that is textured whether the player can see it or not. Just make multiple patches of terrain and weld them together. This will give you more flexibility when creating your terrain. If you have large fields and open spaces then make you terrain patches larger.
