I've made a very simple single player map that is pretty much a box with a player spawn in it and some lighting. When i load it up i compile BSP, reflections and build fast files, VIS and paths seem to make my game freeze.

So anyway my map has no models in it when i tried to place a model of a gun it then my map also refuses to load.

To be able to run around (as a player not a spectator ghost) do i need any player models or scripts at all?

Use the SEARCH function, this is a known problem and there are multiple threads on this forum.

You need to create a map using the launcher "Create Map" button, then load that map up in radiant.

That is how i created my map but the moment i made any changes to the map it began spawning me as spectator. Do i just hit save in radiant and will that save all the files for me or do i need to save additional files aswell?

Did you save it as a new file? If so, then that's your problem. When you save a map file in radiant as a different name, it does not make all of the .gsc and .csv files that go along... and since there is no .gsc to tell it what weapon loadout to start with, it doesn't create a player, hence spectator mode.

yeah i think i did swap the name because i was making multiple saves to back my map up. Ill try again later.

The other problem i ran into was that upon putting a weapon in my map via right clicking the 2d window and putting a weapon floating near the spawn my map no longer loaded.

So my question is how do i get a player to pickup/start with a weapon?

the create map button also creates a gsc for your map, in that gsc it has weapon loadouts, like the guy above you said dude.
