make sure your grid is set to 1 , left click next to the 1 you want to select and drag the cursor across the vertices , you should get a box and when you let go of the left mouse button the vertices should be selected , press alt click and drag the vertices you want to move

Hopefully someone can help me now. lol

How does one cut a terrain patch?
I tried (with Stu's help) to:
select the patch
press v-- for vertices
hightlight a couple rows
then press ctrl+shft+x
nothing happens. in the log at the bottom it says it splits them but I still only have one section.

What am I doing wrong? I know I'm gonna slap myself when someone tells me how easy it is lol

1.) Select your terrain mesh and press "v" to enable verticies.
2.) Shift Click on one vert and you should highlight a full row or column of the single mesh, do again on the same vert to switch.
3.) Press "Shift Ctrl X" and it will look like nothing happened.
4.) Deselect your mesh and try to select it, it should be 2 seperate pieces now.
