by what i have seen you have to use the tree trunk model then use the tree top model in a 3d skybox to make it look like its on top.

Place a prop_static where you wan't yer tre, then enter it's properties.
There is a tag for model, click there then browse.

I am not sure how the Counter-Strike model folders look, but there should be a folder called folliage or something. Browse around, you should find your tree.

Edit:
If you are making a HL2 level and not a CS level, then I'm pretty sure that you can't use the tree you want. Since HL2 doesn't feature palm trees or desserts.

I dont think that should matter Xinos, as the model files used between the two are the same (I should presume!)...

What you might need to do however is copy the model file from the cstrike\models (or whatever it is - I havent started modding HL2) into the HL\models (again --> or whatever). Therefore the model of the palm will be in the right spot and will be able to be accessed by HL2 - rather than CS:S only. I also expect that as CS:S is technically still a mod of HL2, there should be no copyright issues...
