I installed McAfee AV yesterday and since than my computer reboots when I try to play HL2 or CSS.
Uninstalled Mcafee (McPain-in-the-ass) the unofficial way, aka getting rid of the program files map, because normal uninstall didn't work.
I also reinstallled HL2.
But I still getting reboots when I try to play
Can anyone help me? |

Well, there are some keys left on the registry, I think that they are part of the problem, but I don't want to mess around in that thing.
Yeah, most AVs are as evil as the viruses they are supposed to protect you from
Had Noman, no problems with it, but the contract expired should have bought a new one, but I went the cheap road and downloaded the pest from my ISP
Might try to use regclean, it's a risk, coz it isn't written for XP
Can always undo it again
Hate to reformate again, did it some weeks ago, was a pain in the ass to get everything installed again |

i would suggest using grisoft's AVG as an antivirus...it is free, updates daily and you control it
there is a registry cleaning program that micro$oft put out for xp, but you have to search through their site to find the link for it
there is also a program that is called ad-aware by lavasoft ( www.lavasoftusa.com) and it allows you to view what is occuring in your registry BEFORE the changes are made (mostly for spyware - but ad-watch is configurable)
there is also an installation cleanup utility that was also released by micro$oft, and if you ever tried to reinstall moh you would have had to use this proggy, as there was bits that werent removed by the uninstall process and caused no end of grief...a search on mr.gates site would also turn that up for you
good luck |

Have ad-aware, didn't work on this one
I'll try the program for xp, the regclean for 9x doesn't work anyway
I'm going to get Norman back because I liked it anyway
And the error got fixed, accidently btw
It were the nividea drivers who got screwed up.
Found it out when I tried to change the settings and the comp rebooted.
Only thing I had to do was (un)install them
I also tried to get rid of all McAfee registrykeys manually and verify the Steam files before, might have helped a bit too, don't know that for sure. |

quick search turned this up Quote:
| The RegClean utility is no longer supported and has been removed from all Microsoft download sites.

|
there are other programs that do this for you...try winxp manager or system mechanic |

Kaspersky Internet Security or Anti-Virus.
Never had a problem with EITHER of these! I had Norton Internet Security installed before Kas, and I had a world of problems for about a 6 months. Once my subscription ran out, I decided to try Kaspersky, mainly because, like Foyleman said, the damn thing took over my machine, and was a biscuit eater to configure.
Never looked back! Never had any bother using MSM or YiM, the firewall is dead easy to configure, and after I installed it for the first time, it turned out my machine was riddled with virus' that Norton just didn't detect! Not only that, the internet security package offers full protection from email virus' and adware installers, etc. It actually gets minor updates to its database every few hours, not that you would know.
Seriously, you wouldn't regret getting this, everyone I have told about it that actually bought are well impressed. No problems with games or installers either. |
