As far as I know, carentan was a custom map from cod1 that make it to official in later version cod.

Any more info? name of creator? confirm If it is true?

Im not 100% sure but from the 1st day i played vcod ( patch 1.2 or 1.3 ) carentan was already included in the game =)

Carentan originated from COD1 and was vaguely based on the Band Of Brothers Episode Carentan. From its popularity people have made custom maps based on it and IW chose to keep the same level through the COD games, chances are we'll see another version of Carentan for COD World At War.

This is my understanding of it, I could be wrong.

In the first days of June 1944, the city of Carentan is a key point between the two American landing beaches of Utah and Omaha. The Germans launch only local attacks, or they entrench in their strongpoints. On 9 June, the Americans make little progress in front of Carentan, which is naturally protected by the river Douve in the west and the river Vire in the east, and the narrowness of the bridges. They break against a crack unit : the parachutists of the 6th Para regiment led by Major von der Heydte. On 11 June they launch several attacks both from the north and the south. On 12 June, the American parachutists attack again simultaneously on three axes, and end up clearing Carentan in the evening.

Carentan has always been in CoD from the beginning, so it was not made by a mapper outside of IW...

but the map mp_stanjel (for most people better known as mp_uo_stanjel) is a map that was created for vCoD by one of the mappers not related to IW, and it was adopted into UO (slightly modified) by Greymatter now known as treyarch...
if i remember correctly, that mapper did get paid for his map.

I always thought Carentan was a community made map. I didn't get into the custom map scene till CoD2, where Carentan was a stock map, so it was a bit of a surprise to me.

At end the end of the day though, when you look at alot of the SP and MP maps from CoD you can spot similarities with Band of Brothers.

Just take Foy for example, quite obviously based on the Foy from episode 7, ' The Breaking Point' where the company assaults the town of Foy. There is also the assault on the gun battery at Brecourt Manor which briefly featured in an SP mission as well as an MP map.

Come to think of it, there is a brief reference to Band of Brothers in Company of Heroes in the third mission where an airborne company enters the town and is ambushed by an MG situated in a cafe over looking the road into town. Not to mention the likely reference to the last quote of the series where Richard Winters describes serving in a 'Company of Heroes'.

I dont know of any map beside mp_stanjel that went from Community to Stock map (although it was never release publicily before COD:UO)

Remember that both BoB and Cod are used real location and so this can exaplain a lot of the similarity
