Something that might be interesting on the topic of "- U.K. Video Game Design Degrees Not Worth the Paper They’re Printed On"

2 Years ago I walked into a trial course for Games Design and Animation, the guy started briefing us on what the course was about and stated that it mainly consisted of the Level Design aspect of Games. I was asking him what kind of programs we were going to be using and ... he didn't know. He knew the animation programs but none of the level design ones, I gave him a list for him to search out on the internet and left.

(I couldn't do the course as I was did not have the right qualifications in IT, but he said if I produced a level design portfolio I could get in... his superiors told me otherwise and that I'd need to do a 2 year ICT course or wait until I was over 21...)

So from that I can understand completely that people are not being given the right education to get into the games industry, simply because the tutors are clueless and the system is corrupt.

Yeah I think your right techno. In the university's/colleges around by where I live there is barely anywhere that actually offers this as a course. So it seems that its either taught badly or just not at all

That's a shame... and I think it's typical. Although the article we discussed on the show doesn't mention it, I think this is prevalent throughout the world's education system.

I believe it's the fault of the education facility. They should have a test for the educators before they can go on to teach others. The problem with that... the facility doesn't know about the subject either so how can they reliably test the educators.

In time, as more people learn about subject the education system will become better. But nothing, ever, will replace real-world experience.

And yet its so easy to teach level design, walk into the classroom, write your name on the board.... then write

I have been thinking about applying to teach Level Design at the local university, but I'm really not sure if I would enjoy it, I will certainly ask about it though.

This doesn't help my state of mind. I am already being pressured about Uni courses at college and I have only been back for 2 days. I want to find a course that is orientated around gaming, programming or otherwise. I guess I need to look into it some more.

I agree though, teaching isn't what you think it should be.

Can you imagine a class taught by the staff of modsonline. Jynx is fighting with the students, Stryder is drunk and foyle is playing Conan, pretending that he is teaching the students to concept of MMO's.
