Can someone remind my as to why we are making a wiki site?

I started putting the whole wiki site together... and I can't figure out why I am doing it.

People can already add and edit posts and tutorials to this site. So what happens to the tutorials entered on this site?

When you search the forums you can come across many many posts about the same subject with the same answer, so maybe a wiki will slowly compile all of those answers, and we can finally get rid of all the duplicate posts?

ok.. so the idea is to provide a site full of information in a FAQs type of format. We aren't trying to replace the Tutorials or the Forums.
Correct? I can see a use in that.

I cannot see the purpose of:
- duplicating the tutorials and making some valid and some invalid
- splitting up the tutorials into multiple site so you can't find all the answers in one location

This is where my question came into play.

Anyone want to help get the wiki started before it goes public? Techno?

I have already started compiling FAQ based answered.

I am currently.. supposed to be working though, so I think the wiki launch should be paused until enough info is generated.

So to get it straight, its basically a more advanced FAQ which includes errors and help with refrenses/links to possible posts (on modsonline.com) and/or tutorials?

It could be something lithe A-Z tutorial on the old IW forums (which referenced a lot of modsonline tutorials).

http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1417&p=23912&hilit=tutorial%23p23912

Don't think the links in the link would work but that's a rough outline of the basics that any complete map would need.

What would also be good is something like the MP checklist which is now gone. I can't find the cache for it.

There are alot of times I wish I could do morethan just answer a specific post here and there, but rather have a more complete answer to the "whole picture" but even a tutorial seems too limited at times... Such as a PK3 tutorial wouldn't go much beyond the basic use of winzip...

Also the referance ability is more proper, I would hate to link to a post from a tutorial, but in a wiki, it's practically expected to have a list of sources...

When a user asks a question in the forum, many different users will post little snippets of code or information which slowly build up to a solution. With the wiki, it becomes easier for all that information to get submitted and ordered,

I think the majority of the posts here are "solution" requests whereas alot of the tutorials really are pages there telling you how to do a specific things. The wiki would allow development of the solution to be laid down and then referenced by anyone who has the same issue.

I don't think it will interfere with tutorials, really.

The tutorial section is already very accessible: that's why so many people come here. It would be nice to have a more efficient means to search through the forums, but I'm not sure what that would look like. I really like Supersword's idea, but it seems like it would be an enormous pain in the neck to set up and maintain unless you can find a way for everyone to participate in the organization.

Maybe you can ask posters to include a "keyword" line someplace in the post that would contain relevant terms from a pre-defined list. That way, every new post would have built-in tags, so you wouldn't miss a useful post just because, for example, the word "script" or "scripting" isn't used or is misspelled. Having such a system in place would make it much easier for those responsible to categorize information on the wiki.

If you do make a Wiki for the site wouldn't it bring more people to the website?

E.g. Somebody searches on Google for 'How do I Compile a Call of Duty 4 Map?'

It wouldn't come up with a tutorial or post on this website because I don't think Google finds posts on here (I could be wrong I just did a quick search to check) but it would find it if it was on a Wiki.

So a Wiki would be a good way to get more people the this website.

Sorry if I'm wrong because I'm dead tired and not thinking properly [sleeping] but I think it's right. [banghead]

Just as a dumb question, why in the world did the Wiki, and the IW forum get removed and revamped anyways?

In my opinion that was a very foolish thing for IW to do.

I think that a Wiki here would do very much good. It obviously needs to be set up properly to access everything. I don't know about having users the option to set up key words will do much good. Although its a very good idea, as of right now, people can't even set up the headings for the Threads correctly... Headings like "I need help" or "Error, Help Please" Doesn't do any good. There are alot of youngsters on here that don't know right from left. It is definitely worth a try though.

Even though people talk bad about this site, I think its one of the best you can find out there, no matter what anyone says. It has been proven again and again the power here in these threads.

In my opinion, to add a Wiki here... would Dominate everything in the gaming community.
