Probably tired of the non-stop nagging from modders, a response was finally posted about the fate of the Source SDK. VERC Collective has stated that while they are "not going to mention a specific day, but certainly the word "soon" is appropriate here." There you have it. The SDK for HL2 will be here... soon. |

| Half-Life, the original, was not "re-made" with Source. What they did was the following:
the upped or changed the textures and models to be of the quality and definition that they were from Blue Shift, I believe. The other thing they did was change all the water in the game to the way water is handled in Source. That's it. Do not expect to see the Half-Life maps remade like the maps with Counter-Strike were handled, because that is NOT the case. |

What?
Does it mean that Source is only an evolution of the Quake Engine?
If all they did was change some textures and waters in the Quake Engine then its source must be the same!
I thought that the Source Engine was a totally new one not an updated Quake thingie...

I'll respond to both, here:
First, Col. J.P.:
I'm sorry, I think you are misunderstanding me, let me clarify. :)
When you purchase Half-Life 2, you get multiple games in the package. One of them, is what is called Half-Life: Source.
Half-Life: Source, is the original game of Half-Life, that now essentially runs in the same engine as Half-Life 2. There is now absolutely zero association with Source and Quake/id/etc.
But Half-Life: Source, or rather the original game of Half-Life that now runs in the Source engine, did not get a major visual overhaul like Counter-Strike: Source. All they did in terms of changing things visually, was bring the original Half-Life textures up to the quality of Blue Shift, which was a Half-Life expansion pack, as well as add in the water effects that are capable and frequently used in Half-Life 2, and add in ragdoll physics to the creatures and to some objects/debris throughout the game.
So to sum up:
Half-Life games no longer have anything to do with Quake/ID.
Half-Life 2 = runs in the Source engine, super incredible visuals, totally new game
Counter-Strike: Source = A complete remaking of the game/mod 'Counter-Strike' that has included physics, major graphics overhauling that is more comparable to Half-Life 2, and much better sound effects.
Half-Life: Source = The original Half-Life, with very slight texture improvements, some integrated physics, and new water effects.
Any more questions just ask. :)
rEdrUmMDK:
I generally hate team based games myself, but to be honest for a long time I was REALLY addicted to it. Because there aren't any classes among the teams, and because the gameplay is still fast and visceral, I enjoyed it. However, Half-Life 2 does not yet inherently contain any sort of DM/CTF, etc.
Do not fret about that, though, because as foyleman posted earlier, there is a way to get 'unsupported' DM to work in Half-Life 2 through console commands. This game is going to be huge, and the community for mapping and making mods is going to be incredible. There is already a whole other multiplayer game/mod in the works called Day of Defeat (all new graphics inside the Source enging), as well as a mod that adds cooperative multiplay against the AI. I really have a feeling that the developers are going to include or mod in both deathmatch, CTF modes, and perhaps even some multiplayer games that include vehicles, since apparently the functionality is already there in the engine.
Valve has said that when this game was shipped, released, and all the major bugs taken care of, that their developers, to keep them working but without immediately burning them out on a whole new title, would most like work on SDK tools, mods, maps, etc for a while to further Half-Life 2's longevity.
Wow, what a long post. |
