Try increasing grid side, this will decrease light map count and allow you skip "out of memory error".

2GB of ram isn't enough to compile a map. You have to remember, the stock maps were compiled on a server! You can, like stated here, remove some elements, or simply add more ram to your PC.

It doesn't matter how much physical RAM you have, once you run out of it, it begins to use the virtual memory (also known as the page file) on the hard drive.
The only limitation is how much RAM can be allocated to the process, for a 32bit program on a 32bit OS that is 3GB, 32bit program on a 64bit OS is 4GB.

I don't believe the compiler is capable of using "page file", as it's quite a bit slower than system ram. A 32bit OS can use 3.7GB of ram, he's at 2. Quite a lot of room to bump up there. A 64-bit OS would help, if he got more ram.

P.S. 64-bit OS supports up to 128GB.

The compiler is able to use the page file, of course using it will slow down the compile process, but it will still use it nonetheless.

Get a 32bit OS and compile a map that gets the out of mem error, keep a note of the parentage it got up to, remove as much RAM as possible and compile again, this time it will take longer but will get the to same point again.

See this for process memory limits on 32 and 64 bit OSs - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

A 64bit OS has a maximum addressable space of 16EB, not 128GB, however at the moment the largest amount supported by a windows OS is 2TB.

2^32 = 4,294,967,296 bytes
4,294,967,296 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 4,096 MB = 4GB

It’s different for 64-bit:

2^64 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616
18,446,744,073,709,551,616 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 16EB (exabytes)

My mistake on the 64-bit.
