Can i just check to make sure i'm getting this right, i do a normal map the way dilbert said, and the darker parts are depth/low and the lighter parts are high?? is that right???

I think that's right - white parts will look higher thak black parts when you use the normal map filter on it.

just a little tip, if you think the Photoshop normal maps plugin looks good already , try using Crazybump.

Best program i ever came across for making normals, heightmaps, ambient maps, specularmaps, and that all based on your existing texture without any need to edit it really. atm the program is i na beta phase, and free for testing so grab your chance now to try it, I've been working with the photoshop plugin for a while 2, but well it's rubbish compared to this little prog
