Hey guys,

A buddy of mine wanted to start mapping so he installed the tools and the Radiant 1.1 Update. Radiant opened just fine, but we did see a problem. After he he created his room, he wanted to add a texture to it and we noticed that his textures or most, if not all were missing. Basically the textures showed up with little gray and dark gray (transparent) squares, the default sign for a missing texture.

We made sure Radiant was looking in the right files and folders for these textures and made sure the textures existed, even the ones that showed were missing were indeed in the right place in his games files. For some reason Radiant doesn't see the textures. We installed and reinstalled the Mod Tools with no luck. The error basically says in the feedback window below in Radiant..." WARNING!!! Could not connect to source control " Then it proceeds to tell you which textures it can't load as you scroll through them.

I did search after search on this problem and everyone who had the same problem got no answer. I did find a hint of an answer which had something to do with "Shader Model 3.0" suggesting that if your Video card doesn't have or does not support it, you cannot view the textures. Although his COD 4 game runs great with awesome graphics and researching his video card an "ATI Radeon X1800" says that it supports "Shader Model 3.0". I'm not entirely sure what this is as a whole. Can your video card be updated to "Shader Model 3.0" ? Or does it come with it automatically?

I checked ATI's website for information on Shader Model 3.0 but found nothing for downloads or updates. We updated his video card to the latest drivers, and he does have DirectX 9c installed.

If anyone has any information on this problem or could point me to a solution I would be very grateful. This is so frustrating...

Here is someone else with the same problem showing screenshots of what it looks like.

http://www.modsonline.com/Forums-top-71158-0.html

And another guy with the same problem posting the code from the message window and showing both errors in his links when you shut down Radiant. Everyone who has these missing textures problem gets these errors when you close Radiant.

We really need some help on this...

Ehh, apparently there is no-one that knows or everyone's too busy to care =(

I've seen tons and tons of topics about missing textures going up everywhere, on all kinds of sites. Guess what? About 90% of them have no replies except the owner double-posting, and 10% of them have a reply of someone saying they have the same problem.

And what bugs me is. I've been in the mapping community for Call of Duty since I was 9 years old. (I'm 14 now btw)
I did Cod1 mapping, Cod United offensive mapping, Cod2 mapping but it was a new system so sorta hard to get used to, I would of done Cod3 mapping if it wasn't on console with no mapping tools.

Of course I got Call of duty 4, since I own in the games too. Since October 2007 I had been hyped daily about the tools coming out. Well, guess what. I finally get them installed when they came out early this year. I'm like, woohoo! Then I get to the wall textures.

Boom. Hum, should I make my building with these blue square somethings over here, or these other blue square somethings over there. (aka missing textures except for all the Arabic signs, and I think making an entire map with a poster of an Arabian llama and a jihad isn't very creative)

So, I reinstall the tools several times. I uninstall Cod4 for heaven's sake, losing my Rank 55 and my golden AK, and reinstall it. I check for viruses. I checked to make sure I installed it right.

And here's me and my friends talking one day

friend: hey i think you need pixel shader 3 to do mapping tools
friend: it comes with nVidia

(right about there, it struck me. Infinity Ward has 'best played by nVidia' on almost all of its games. so maybe screwing everyone over that bought an ATI card... like me... to get more people to buy nVidia cards so we can finally map while they count their profits is just plain business to them)

Oh, and upon further research, Call of duty 4 needs pixel shader 2. Suddenly the mapping tools need Pixel Shader 3, which only nVidia Geforce cards have. Revenue for nvidia much? Anyway..

me: wow this sucks
me: but cod4 doesn't need pixel shader 3

To make a short sad story shorter, I spend almost all night trying to frikking find a solution to the problem. I guess I'll go look at those Geforces and buy me one just so I can make maps. Haha , sadly joking, I'm not made of money :(

But, REALLY, I'd LOVE to hear someone tell me my friend is wrong about the pixel shader 3 thing, and that I can make Cod4 maps without having to buy a 100 dollar graphics card.

HINT HINT WINK WINK

I'll make a post on my clan's forums and see if anyone running ATI has had success using the mod tools. If no one else responds here, hopefully that will at least provide a clue.

I do see that the Radeon X1800 GTO has pixel shader 3 support, so not all ATI have only version 2. I still don't know if that's the issue or not, but at least we know it's probably not an ATI/Nvidia thing. I think there's plenty of people here probably using ATI that we would hear about this problem more often if that was the case. You never know, though. :)

Thanks much. I'm also still looking for a driver update that may include Pixel Shader 3 for the ATI "Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series" card, no luck yet. I'll keep on searching

Man Call of duty 4 would be so much fun to work with (map making I mean), since even Call of Duty 1's map maker was fun to work with imo.

Oh, and, since this isn't my thread at all, I'll answer the topic poster's question the best I can...

Missing textures have to do with your Graphics Card, 100% sure. I'd guess not having Pixel Shader 3 built into your graphics, DeekCiti.

I'd check out getting a Graphics Card with Pixel Shader 3 support if I were you, and that's sadly the only 'known' way to solve this 'missing texture' problem. The best known solution is to get a completely new Graphics Card with pixel shader 3 built into it. And, from common program knowledge, 'Shader Model 3.0' is a program/function from Pixel Shader 3.

I used to get a error on Call of Duty 2 on my PC before I got a new graphics card about 'Shader Model 2.0', which I found out was because of not having Pixel Shader 2.0 actually. So I got a new graphics card that had Pixel Shader 2.0

The same would apply here, I guess.

And I'd love to go on and on about all this stuff, but I knew eating that Burrito was going to come back to screw me over later, which is now. (Sorry tmi tmi)

Bbl [biggrin]

There won't be a driver update for it, unfortunately. Pixel Shader is a feature built into the card, not something that can be software emulated, afaik.

Eh... I figured that... no harm in looking anyway... [ohwell]

Yep, looks like every one of us unlucky d00ds that got missing textures have to go buy new graphic cards..

Well, BF2 works on this GFX card on the highest quality settings, so I'm probably not going to buy a whole new one.

But, to anyone else getting this error.

Look for a Graphics Card with Pixel Shader 3, and buy it if you want to make maps for Call of duty 4 that bad.

Solved, and I'm gone. [casanova]

I have a lot of default cod4 textures not showing up, getting the checkered texture for missing default textures. But I see the last post was posted on here back in 2008. So I guess in those 8 years this problem hasn't been fixed yet?! Lol, wow, can't believe that. But back when I started mapping for CoD4 I could have sworn that there was something on here, ModsOnline, that shows where these default textures are at so you can put them in radiant. When you first put Radiant in there is no "Images" folder in the "Raw" folder. There's a "materials" folder but no "Images" folder.

I am not quite sure what you are asking but arent all of the brushes in the xanim, xmodel, xmodelalias, xmodelpieces and xmodelsurfs folders?

I had a hard time finding a laptop that would run the mod tools properly, there is no info on the web any more as it is an old game but I lucked out on the asus g76sx I got on ebay for 500 dollars, it has windows 7 and after changing compatability mode on the exe's and running as administrator I got it to work and all textures (brushes) were there. I could copy paste whatever folder you need but I think the underlying issue here is compatability. My advice would be to use what works and not try to make something work that is incompatible. Not trying to discourage you in any way, I am trying to get a 2006 version of corel draw working on the same asus laptop to run my laser cutter and I have to buy a older laptop for it to work, sucks but I want it to work so off to ebay I go right now to buy one. ;-)
