Maybe a stupid question but for some reason I don't seem to be able getting my decals to work.

I do everything as written in the tutorials but still they don't appear when I compile the map and play it. In Radiant they do appear.

This is what I do. For example I make a brush that I want to be a road. I use chalk for the brush and than I give the top facing an asphalt texture. I select the brush and duplicate it. The duplicate I give a decal facing e.g. tire tracks and make sure that this brush is exactly in the same position as the original.
What's wrong with that? The decal doesn't appear but for some reason I am able to look through my brush and see the sky texture of the sky box.

Or do you need to place your decal brush on top of the original?

Maybe someone can help me out here.

Make sure the asphalt texture u used is not a decal also.

I did it with a dirt texture - looked right in editor but when i tested level you could see the textures of buildings below the terrain level through the terrain.

Check out my tutorial with the link below. The tut works for both cod2 and cod4. The tutorial uses a wall for example but will work the same for a horizontal surface too.

Thanks for the link. The tutorial is helpful. From what I see you place the decal just on top of the brush you want to decal to appear on and not in it.

Thanks!

Indeed that is how it is done. I place it on the first unit next to the brush where you want it to be.
