I have followed the lighting 101 tutorial. But my lights don't work. I have used the florescentlights on model. Under the entities I entered all the stuff I was supposed to. Then I created the null. selected the light and the null and connected them with the "w" key. The light doesn't shine down and light up the room. Only the light bulbs are lit. Can someone explain to me what I am doing wrong?

thanks

Wow. From what you described, you sound a little lost on the lighting issue.

1. Make an object that looks like it's giving off light. I tend to use florescent lights on the ceiling like you do.

2. Select the florescent light model once, then unselect it. This is my trick to establish the right X, Y, and Z for the next object ,which is the light.

3. Right click on the 2D map, preferably from the overhead view, right where the object model is located. From the pop up menu, there should just be a selection called "light". Depending on your default settings, your camera view should suddenly get dark if a light is present. Don't panic.

4. If you haven't done anything else, you should still have the light selected. Press N to bring up the entity properties window. Adjust the radius and intensity of the light as you wish. Exit the properties window by pressing N again.

5. Now, press K to bring up the color properties window. Select the color of light you want your florescent light to emit. Press K again to exit the window.

See if that works.

Ok I started like you said. I deleted the null, and put in the light. View went dark with circles on the walls, ceiling and floor. But when I compiled map. No light in the hall except the bulbs. Still not getting anything. I am lost or maybe just don't understand the tutorial that is on this site. If it isn't to much trouble can you please run me through it from the first step.

thanks

Im havin trouble with lights being darker after compiling aswell bud - looked at the backlot_geo map to c how they had lit there indoor rooms (particualy the building in the centre that u can jump out of window onto a ladder and get to roof), LOL that made me even more confused as there are no lights in the rooms.

There are a few scattered around outside the buildings but i dont c how they could emit enough light to fill the rooms cause if i copy one into a room of a test map and compile the room is barely lit. oh well more trial and error testing :)

Have you defined values for your worldspawn yet? I'm not positive, but I believe that's a necessary process to get lighting working in your map, and even if it's not, it's a good thing to know. To do this, bring up the entity window (hit n), scroll all the way down to the bottom and you should see worldspawn. Click once on that and you should now be able to add values to the worldspawn information.. these are things like _color, .6 .3 1, and whatnot.. take a look at the COD4 tutorials page here.. there should be one about worldspawn settings for the current maps. Take a look at that and copy the values from one of those to your map. Sorry if this is a little unclear, but it's been a long day.

Yeah worldspawn is already done. This map just needs the lighting in the buildings. All spawn points are in, etc. Just having trouble with the lighting to work correctly

Light at just the bulbs? Sounds like you need to dial up the radius in each light entity. For a "normally" lit room, I usually go with about radius value of 400 to 800.

In your entity properties window (N), scroll down the second menu until you see the key called radius and click on it. The two text fields below should populate with the key radius and whatever default value, which is usually 200 I think. Change the value to 400 and hit Enter. If you don't hit Enter and just Tab out of the field, you didn't enter it. Try that.

SOULTAKER,

You don't need lights in all rooms. If your worldspawn settings are set properly (sunlight, radiosity, contrastgain, etc), entire interior structures can be lit by bouncing sunlight.

Check your keys and values for each light node. Specifically, it looks like your intensity may be low. Also, check your worldspawn settings. (Nice map, by the way.) I suggest copying the worldspawn for Overgrown based on the look of your map.
