This is something that you won't see in SOF2 (hint brushes) that work. It is really supposed to be called zoneing. Redfaction had it in a way. This is taken from Unrealed. Zoning your level Properly zoning your level is one of the best things you can do to speed up your level and increase FPS. To zone your level create sheets and close off sections of your level from other sections by adding a Zone Portal. If you had this in SOF2 you wouldn't have to worry about tris.
