Hello. I new here and to level design. I am wondering if there is any way to open dev made mp maps in order to look around and possibly make custom prefabs. Is there any easy way to do this? (open the maps I mean)

No that's not possible. The reason is to protect the mappers: if you make a map, you don't want other people to be able to change things to it, and then releasing it saying "I made it" [crazy]

The only map you have available is mp_backlot which was included with the tools. There is no way to extract the others, although there are still a few prefabs from the other maps inside the prefabs folder.

Why not just make your own? There is no difference from making a map normally.

I'm an open source kinda guy. I disagree. As long as you give credit I think its very useful and helps others.

But that's the point, not everyone else is. I'd be discouraged from making a unique mod if anyone could go in and mess it up/steal code, and although people would usually ask, there are still those who don't.

I dont want to use the whole map. Just maybe see how a broken wall or style of decals(not even sure how decals works or best practices)are done.

Being new to mapping I'd like to see how the pro's do it. Tutorials are nice but are usually lacking in the detail dept. "we'll get into that later" "just do this for now". Though they show you many things they dont always pull everything together.

there is an up and down side to everything my friend however "fear of" should never be a motivation for anything imo ;)
