Hello modders and mappers!

I'm currently working on a map (abandoned factory at dusk, chernobyl style). It looks allright when i testrun it but it lacks a bit of "spookyness" so i want to add some weathereffects like fog or rain. I searched these forums and internet but i couldn't really find a tutorial of any kind.

Does anyone know how to add fog or rain? The awnser might be simple but im no mapping professional yet.

Thanks in advance! [thumbs_up]

Look at the stock mp map gsc's in cod4\raw\maps\mp, and cod4\raw\maps\createfx, I think. Maps like Downpour and Winter Crash should help with snow & rain effects.

Creative lighting is one of the easiest ways to add an eerie feel to a map. When making lights add a slight hint of a cold colour (turquoise works best) then desaturate it so that it's almost white again. Works best with fluorescent lights because it looks more natural as tungsten bulbs tend to have a warmer feel to them (the same can be done for non-fluorescent light by adding a hint of a warm colour like orange). Cold lighting gives an aprehensive feel to a map. Careful placement of lights to provide shadowing can also give a creepy feel. Combine the lighting with a hazy fog & possibly some rain & you've got a really creepy feeling map.

I'm guessing it works the same way as adding fire or smoke to your map, but as i said im no mapping pro. I was hoping someone could point me to a tutorial of some sort so can actually read what im doing (and learn) instead of copying codes and brushes of excisting maps.

You hit the nail on the head with that one. I've been experimenting with the lighting to create some shadows and dark places and as you said i used a cold blue/whitish color. Now that im happy with my lighting i want to add some fog because the map looks too clear and clean.

Slightly related: Is it possible to make flickering lights? This would add even more creepyness to my map.

Thanks for all the help sofar and cheers in advance for any help that might come.

For the fog try the CoD1 tutorials section. I think there's one in there somewhere. should technically work in the same way for CoD4.

As for the lighting, i'm not sure. I think for a light to be dynamic it has to be set as a primary light but i'm not sure that flickering can be added. You could try making a primary light then encasing it in brushes textured with the shadow cast texture & use a script to make it randomly dissappear & appear on a loop to give a flickering effect. I'm not sure if that's possible though as I haven't really played around with the dynamic lighting much.
