I'm currently downloading the crysis demo. (i'm a bit late on it, lol). And i hear the direct x 9 looks good on the game. and dx10 is far better. So i tested out DX9 on CoD2 and its not running all that smooth. Im running:

GeForce 8600GTX
2 gigs of DDR2 memory
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 6000+

and while running max settings in CoD2 with DX7 my fps is 70-100 and while running DX9 my fps goes to 15-30. What should i upgrade that can allow me to run DX9 smoothly at high settings?

Well, I can't say the same for my computer(I'm cheap[casanova]), However my friend runs an AMD 2.4 Ghz Dual Core( Which I believe is the 6000 +), with 2 gigs of ddr2 RAM.

The only difference is that he has the 8800 GT for a graphics card

Im not familiar with the specs of the 8600 GTX, but its the only difference i can see, and btw, his runs fine in dx9 [biggrin]

when i bought the 8600. i didn't see much a downgrade from the 8800. so i was faced spending X amount for the 8600 or 2-3 times more for the 8800 which wasnt largly better. dx9 might be specially made for 8800 which wouldnt make any sense but whatever. thx for the reply.

2.4ghz amd is a 3800 :P

MasterChief your fps is unusually low [eek] i have the same stuff as you apart from the gfx card as ive got a 7900gtx, i get 200fps+ in dx7 and around 60-100 in dx9 all other options on max on cod2
my brother has a 8600gts and he gets around the same fps as me

also you would need vista to run games in dx10

well the guide didnt help much unfortunatly. i have no idea whats going on. i have the newest drivers and everything so theres no reason i cant run CoD2 on max settings with DX9. Heck, i just got the crysis demo and i cant even play it on low settings...so whats going on with my machine?

also a side question. i have a widescreen moniter and nothing seems different, in a movie when you run widescreen you see more on the left and right sides. what resolution and ratio do i need to run so i see more in my games on the sides like you would in movies? same with websites and everything.

hmm noob question but how do find out my motherboard? (for some stupid reason i forget. i know its a Asus, book says its a "M2A-MVP" but i cant find that on the asus website for bios updates. i have a nvida 590 sittin behind me still in the box awaiting the rest of the parts to come but id like to get my current computer to run to its best so i can have 2 computers to game on.

(also a random side question, is the 590 SLI at least one of the best motherboards for amd 64bit? or is there something that totally blows it out of the water thats under 400 bucks?)

bah a second edit here. sry for question spamming but i know a good chunk about computers but theres always much much much more to learn, and it seems i have still quite a bit.
to my question; could my hard drive cause lowsy FPS? its a old junker that i need to get rid of. i just got earlier this week by UPS my new 250gig 7200 RPM. this one is like a 5k-ish RPM one. if that. my new 250gig is about half the thickness of my current one in my comp and its a 140. it freezes my computer for a second every minute or so and has gotton worse. so i asked if my Hard drive could cause that since it is causing other problems.

If you're sure the drive is freezing your system every few mins then it sounds like the drive is on its way west.
Have you had any windows 'delayed write' errors?......or does it make a 'grating' noise? If you get either of these then the bearings are probably siezing and you might aswell throw the drive - it'll almost certainly completely fail soon.

Usuallly tho this wont cause low fps - it'll stop your fps dead in its tracks.

And stupid question i know, but you're sure theres nothing unnecessary running in the background.......windows services (like indexing or even system restore), or any ad/spy ware going on?

yea its making stupid sounds. but only when i play games lol. scary thought. >.> which is why i ordered a new one with the rest of the parts i ordered.

but as for anything useless in the background, there is nothing. i defragged and even uninstalled programs of which im not sure why i installed in the first place. i turned off my AVG and my firewall even and still no increase in FPS. i installed the CoD4 demo and i can run at max settings and im assuming its automatically DX9 because i didnt see where to change it. and i set my graphics card to override CoD4 demo to run at 8xQ anti aliasing and i was running on average outside a 35fps and inside 80-100 which still seems kinda low for my machine.
