How do you get that black look that surrounds the broken part of the wall? I assume it must be a decal, but do you have to use terrain patches to get that black look on the outer part of the wall?

There should be a black explosion mark decal. One way to do that is to make a brush that extends over the hole in the wall, texture it with that decal, go to the surface inspector (hit s) and fit the decal. Keep adjusting the size of the brush and fitting the decal until it overlaps like you want it. Then use the clipper tool to cut the decal brush just like the hole in the wall is cut, so all the faces match. When you put the clipped decal brushes in the same spot as the hole in the wall, you should get a nice black edge all around. Hope that works for you.

You could use a series of 2x2 terrain patches on both sides of the wall and CAP them. I've done that before.

Or, you could make a copy of the section of wall out of nodraw_decal.

Texture the surfaces of the duplicate wall that will be the inside and outside wall.

You can find "stalingradwinter_burnt_middle03_decal" and "stalingradwinter_burnt_middle03_decalmid3" in Textures - Locale - decal.

Move this brush off to the side somewhere.

Cut the hole in the original wall.

Line up the nodraw_decal copy in front of the original section of wall. Use the cut lines as a template to cut up the nodraw_decal copy.

Finally, move the nodraw_decal copy onto the original cut up hole.

guys im really having trouble here. i can't seem to get any of my walls to look right. i tried opening prefab houses that iw made and using that as a model but im just not grasping this. if you guys have any more advice or if someone would like to help me, well just please post. thanks.
