I recall in cod1 that I could create sounds on demand using mp3 files as the source sound, provided the file format and bit rate were ones the game code could read.

I have used wav files in cod2 for sounds on demand, but can mp3 files be used for this purpose as well? If so what is the correct format and bitrate? Using an mp3 file would make the iwd file that much smaller.

Unless I am mistaken, I don't think that the sounds on demand tutorial addresses the format and bitrate issue.

I have used the stock mp3 files for ambient sound, but I am not sure if mp3s will work for the sound on demand process.

mp3 files work just as wel as .wav files.

You could ofcourse have figured this out by simply trying it yourself.

Sorry TC, I should have mentioned that I did try just that, but no sound ever played unless I switched the mp3 files for wavs, then the sound played in-game. I assume that the bitrate of the mp3s I was trying to use was not recognized by COD2 for some reason. The console error said something like "attempting to load xxx.mp3, format not recognized" or something along those lines when I loaded the map using /devmap.

Well, the error tells you what's wrong.

So open one of the stock .mp3 files and see what the bitrate, format, etc. is.

Yes, I did that first, but it did not work even when my custom mp3 matched the format and bitrate of stock files, for some unknown reason. I was always able to do it in COD1 with no problem.

I am using creative wave studio to convert wavs to mp3 at the correct bitrate, and in COD1 it works perfectly. I will try it again in COD2, maybe I missed a setting or format was bad on my last try creating the mp3. I know I must be creating the problem myself in my process, but I am not sure where. The stock mp3 files often seem to be in mono (single channel), maybe that's where I went wrong?
