ok, I'm new to mapping for HL2. So what I do is go to steam=>tools=>Source SDK. I click 'launch tool' button, and nothin. it says it's loding for like 10 seconds, but nothing opens. SDK IS the HL2 mapping tool right?

close. SDK is a window of tools. a smaller window will come up with a list of tools. One of them is Hammer. That's the editor.

I saw the window once and when I pressed 'Hammer', it said something like "Which application would you like to open Hammer with?" or something like that. Either way, I couldn't open it.

That doesn't sound like a STEAM error. Check that error again. Also, I will assume this is a legit copy and that you are connected to the internet for STEAM to do it's updating thing.

doesn't work. SDK doesn't even open. the only thing I can do under the tools tab is run 'Source SDK Base' and you don't even do anything in that.

source sdk base doesn't do anything. Something is wrong with your installation and I don't know what to do to fix that.
