I have a question for everyone and anyone who has made a map before.

On a large map that is the size of a base assault map how long does it take your vis to compile. My VIS is taking a very long time when I attempt it. I am concerned that there may be some form of memory leak.

I stopped it after six hours because at the time my map was not finished and I felt that the compiling time was unproductive.

Thanks guys!

I never use -vis, partly because I don't appreciate it's real value, but mostly because it takes too long :D

Have you made any detail brushes and stuff?

For a large uo map with a fast computer vis. will take over a day! Run it thru the nite into day.

Yeah, everything that is not basic structure is detail in my map with portals placed as if the details were not there. Door frames and such.

With some free-standing structures that are small I made into details entirely. You should probably run vis. It would make the map more stable I would think. Especialy for those with lower-end machines. Your choice though I guess.

Thanks for the input guys.

you can always set your vis to "-fast". Compile it and then play the map and see if it lags.

the -vis option (which should be a full vis, not a -fast on your final release!) is there to limit the amount of data which has to be send back and forth between client and server. When the -vis option is not done in your compile, alot more data has to be send between the clients and the server, slowing the server down, causing laggy play, higher ping times etc.

1) the -vis option does not have to be done on an SP map, because the server and the client are the same machine (basically). Though you can ofcourse use the -vis option if you want, no harm done.

2) In a MP map you should always use the -vis option in your final compile. You can test it with -fast, or even without it if you're just running it on your computer.
But if you are ever going to release it, better get used to waiting a while, because the -vis should be done.
