Recently a lot of maps appear at sof2files.com that are modified SoF2 stock maps.
I think i speak in the name of the old-established forum members (and moderators) that we willingly answer questions about decompiling maps. but please do this to learn from the pros or to bring back a lost map.

Thanks [smile]

in response i would like to say that mr gynec seems to have a real issue with this... i dont get it. do you guys not get the concept that we all are using a game we didnt create with... textures we didnt create, models, the engine... the editor... hmm shall i continue? what im getting at is... since most of us do not get paid to map... then to speak of any legality in this would be absurd. so maybe you just dont like someone taking pride in something that they only partially created... welll how can you say that when every thing you have made yourself was only partially created. mapping is a collective efffort... even with all the resourses in the world you can still make a bad map... but unless your a magician... you wont be making a good map from nothing. i think everyone in the community needs to lighten up a bit... i mean really guys... unless someone takes something you made and puts there name on it... why not be happy they thought enough of your work to use it... and now something you made goes in in the community even farther... after all that is why its fun right? to see your work get out there? i do encourage ppl to give credit when they use something... and ill give an example... theres this map out there on sof2 files.. neither me or gynec made it but... he used some lousy textures from anouther map.. bigfreakinghouse... well when the guy saw the map.. he went nuts calling the guy a thief and all this crap... ok he could have left a note like: ty too tweedle dum for the textures but he didnt. so why not leave a comment that says.. kewl you liked my textures... now you have said someting positive and at the same time let everyone know that it was your work... in spite the autors lack of caring. ps the stock raven maps that have been decompiled and remade like my jordan nights and finca invasion and mif kam2 are great. the gamers love them too.. i think as long as everyone sticks to only remaking the maps thats we payed for with the game that no harm is done...xpecially if you dont hide the fact, and, i think if your going to take some poor guys all original map that he did for free... that might b pretty lame.. you should ask first. however if you decompiled one of my original maps and see a building or a stair set or something you like and decide to use it thats pretty kewl really... after all just as gynec says to steal from one person is pleagerism to steal from many is reasearch... im not the only one who has this view. its an unsaid rule to do not steal any brushwork. and credit in your readme to ravensoft? they didnt gave you the permission. sure you can decompile maps. but do not expect other mappers sympathy for this.

to my signature.
it means that you can build some stuff from pictures or reality. not to steal brushwork. why reinvent the wheel?

ok gynec, so basicly you have nothing to say... or is saying that other ppl feel the way you do and saying that its an unwritten rule supposed to convince me? why dont you back up what your saying and tell me why YOU feel its wrong. i just find it sooo hard to belive that you really are concerned how the author of these maps feels... i mean after all where not talking about some poor smuck who just made these to be nice... where talking raven bud... do you think they care? where do you get off i just dont know... really my best guess would be that you really dont care at all about the guy at raven who you feel isnt getting credit or has been stolen from in some way.... more like your tired of making maps from scratch that took you 3000 hrs to make and you keep seing these remakes that took half the time and look twice as good and that irratates you... and ill tell you what i think i have told you once before... if you cant beat em join em... if all you care about is how many ppl download your map maybe you should consider doing a remake.... one, right off the bat ppl will be familiar with the theme of your map... two you will have some of the best brush work to make the structure of your map... i mean weather you be a better mapper or not raven spent a lot of time and thought planning these maps out... alot of us dont feel like doing that... me for one.. i enjoyed what i did with mp_jor1 sooo much... and unlike you i felt like i still had alot to be proud of... and you know what ppl compliment me on... they sure dont say man you designed the best map ever. they know i didnt... but what they do say is... gosh these new paths are great... this roof acces kicks butt. wow you can even get on the roof and not lag to death, you must have done good with the vis.... good job with the lighting... you see it doesnt take a genious or even a mapper to know what i did and what is the original work... why? couse everyone has played these maps so many times we know them by heart... also not every remake is a good one... i wont name any names but you can suck just as bad with other ppls work as you can with your own. remember none of us are just pinning our names to these things... we try to make them better. or expanded in some way... and to blend your work seemlessly with ravens work isnt something we all achieve... and gynec plz if your going to respond say why you care... becouse if your motives are what i think they are, frankly i dont care what you think.

ps gynec,
its soo ironic too, but that saying you like so much... the one you think you know what it means... all i can say is i understand thats what it means to you but, thats a quote from wilson mizner as you know... and thats not what he meant. he meant just what im trying to tell your thick head.

I agree with gynec.

@[STK]Ran[)omHomicide:
Releasing a stock map modified is stealing unless you give credit where it is due. It's also helpful to add what/how you changed the map...

Releasing maps made from other uses... that's also stealing. Should never take pride in this whatsoever, even if you copied a bit of the map to use as "reasearch" is still wrong (once again, unless you give credit).

You didn't research at all, you took... credit or no credit, it is not an original work, therefore... Your not worth my time, to even read all the babble of posts you left... You are a perfect example of a NOOB... Makes me wonder what map your going to release next, maybe finca... That's a good 1...

But I have a better idea for you, Why don't you take a map (since you can't make 1 on your own) from SOF1, there were alot of pimp maps...

As for permission, (not that you woulda asked anyway) I obtained the original MAP files, and asked what the limits on they're useage were...

Kenn Hoekstra

Raven Software
khoekstra@ravensoft.com
http://www.ravensoft.com

replied directly...

That both games were made by raven software, and published by activision, and that they could be "PORTED" between either of the 2 games...

So do yourself a favor, and atleast steal from a differant pile of stock maps... Put what skillz you do have to use for a change... And the best part is, you don't have to BSP-MAP them, raven released the sources, a long time ago... IF you think you could handle texturing them with SOF2 textures, I know it's gonna be a big leap for you, but I have faith that you can't screw it up to bad, as really all you need is brush work, right...

[smokin]

BTW what's up with the triple posting, I see you doing that all the time, trying to boost your count, or something...
