to garde :

i think you spoke a little out of turn my friend... the question wasnt weather or not credit shoudl be given... that is something we all agree on... what these guys are trying to say if im not mistaken is that it is wrong for me to decompile a stock raven map and use it in anyway... credit given or not... and while you may agree with that.. im sure there are many gamers out there including myself... who are very glad that they can finnally get onto the roof of jordan... i know i always wanted too.. and i dont disagree with what you said about listing what changes where made... seems like a fine idea...

ps any map i have decompiled says plainly in the readme: thanks to raven for the original qvm and map files... and agian if im not mistaken these guys still dont think thats good enough... and while i would like to make you all see what im saying in the end it doesnt seem to matter a whole lot. i still make what i want to make and ppl still download what they want to play... o and it was funny what please myob said about making a map called finca... lmao couse in fact i pretty much did... its called finca_invasion. its sp maps finca1 and 2 combined and converted to mp... a featured map at sof2 files since its realease a few weeks ago and well over 2000 downloads already. Who's in competition again... I forget so easily sometimes... Could you remind me?

As for locking the post, This is MODSonline, if you haven't noticed, and I have more respect for this forum, than your life... I don't lock threads to suppress your views, I even let you get the last word, TWICE... That's more than fair...

And if I was trying to be abusive, I'd just edit you post for you, or delete them entirely, so grow up already... I'm not the final say, you have an issue with me, or this forum, take it up with the higher powers...

To start a new thread, about a locked thread, is just NOOBish...

PleaseMYOB has a point.

When I first heard about this tool, I knew that people would abuse its use and it wasn’t long before “stock” maps were altered and posted on “sof2files.com”.

There were also people decompiling custom maps, changing the textures, then not giving credit to the original creator of the map.

This tool was intended for people who wanted to learn how to create maps, but not for people to steal other peoples work (including “stock” maps).

If someone gets permission from the original author to alter a map or use their textures, and gives credit to the author, then this is acceptable. Just give credit to the original creator.

I have a map that I created over a year ago, and used textures from a custom map. I can’t publish this map because I don’t know who created the original textures, and changing them isn’t an option.

Just read the “licence” for SoF2 and think about it before you publish modified “stock” maps.

Just thought I would add my opinion to this topic.

Gotta weigh in on this...just a thought or two.

Stealing? No Way. With the release of tools, source code and everything else the tools were put there for our use.

Education...A significant amount can be learned even of you're NOT making the brushes. I say if you want to strip out the entities and textures and modify the map Go right ahead.

Even if one doesn't do all that...so what?

I don't wanna hear what the purists think, ever.

A guy will know what he can do and doesn't have the abilities for. If any community of mappers thinks someone is less worthy because they have less abilities...Then they can kiss my arse.

This is a game and it's about enjoying oneself.

If it was real life...I'd have a whole different opinion.

Get a job! Work hard and earn your own way.

But this is modding. One can mod as much or as little as their skills allow and sholdn't be morally judged by the pinheads.
WHOEVER they may be---> No finger pointing here. I maybe a pinhead(in fact sometimes I am, but aren't we all on occasion)

Anyhow,

Peace, Out

Thanx for the -convert map feature!
Quake editing has always been a "free" thing. I don't know how anyone can expect to have a copyright on his l33t created map, created with tools that are freely available.
as mentioned before, many games offer that concept of learning from other mappers, quake2 maps could be decompiled easily with e.g. WinBSPC, and doom3 maps will be open sourced, too. every engine modification on quake1 & quake2 needs to be released with the source (because of GPL), i don't hear someone being afraid of getting out his code there.

Tread carefully, friend.

"Free" does not imply "public domain." I am very much in favor of copyrights, and protecting the (limited) rights of creator to disseminate his/her work. I'm not a lawyer, nor can I pretend to know much about IP laws in other countries, but in the US, the act of creating something is the same as copyrighting it.

So unless an author specifically releases a map stating "this map is public domain and I relinquish all copyrights" then it's copyrighted. That the author chooses to distribute it for free is irrelevant.

A similar example would be the textures that Simon (Sock), Yves (Evil Lair) and myself distribute via our sites. They're in open image formats, free for use in maps, mods, TCs, etcetera, but commercial exploitation (i.e. using them in a product being sold for $) is prohibited. Sure, we've made special arrangements to allow some of our works to be used in games, but we we compensated.

Please do not confuse free/open source with public domain.

I'm not a purist, If I was, I wouldn't help others, or give out my *.map files to ANYONE who askes nicely, even STK-NOOBish, I don't even care if my name in the readme.txt or not, I'm here to HELP others...

I think it has a good purpose, but with all good things, there is a time and place...

Unfortunatly, decompile will ONLY help the original author retrieve lost work... And the lazy folk wanting to learn without reading tuts, and asking questions...

All other use is evil...

EVEN, re-doing stock maps, It's bad enough the amount of cheating IN-GAME, now we have to have cheaters in the modding area of SOF2 also... PATHETIC

Even MAYHEM,

as small as it is, and as little effort that went into it... puts a re-make to SHAME... because it has the fundimentals of a CUSTOM map...

Custom : The art of creating that which is uncommon...
