hi i have nrly finished my map of hotchkiss (some might remember the name from S.W.A.T mod), well i went back to mapping a few months ago to finish the map myself as it was re-edited by another mapper. i have finished the map and started portalling. i made all the buildings into portals and works well i am having trouble with the outside portalling. can someone please advise me on how to go about this plz. if you want to look at the portals then my map is on server ip 85.234.148.2:28961 . Cod:UO install needed. my xfire is : pallchrn . many thx for your time. i posted here because i have seen that this is the most viewed forum

There is a tutorial on portalling in the CoD tutorial section. That's a good place to start.

yeah thx i have had a look at the potal tut and still having probs to portal correctly. i get the idea of portals just need a good idea where to add them for best fps



o and another thing ... when i load stock maps in devmap r_showportals 1 . around some objects are yellow edged boxes . ive searched the internet but cant find anything on these. can someone explain what they are? thankyou

My suggestion:

Load some stock maps in dev mode, and then turn Showportals on (/r_showportals 1) to see how the orignal maps use portals. Also try /r_showtris 1 to see the effects of the portals in those maps. This should help you to think about your own design and your own portal layout to some extent.

The yellow boxes you see with /r_showportals 2 seem to be showing either prefabs or special entities placed within the map, not sure but that is my best guess. Also:

/r_showportals 1 seems to show the 2-D plane of the portal texture side of your portal brushes only, along with the "yellow boxes"

/r_showportals 2 seems to show (by my uninformed guess) both the portals themselves and the projection of the 2-D portal plane into the current player view along a line normal (at 90 degrees) to the current player view, and is shown as a light blue outline.

/r_showportals 3 seems to show (by my uninformed guess) both the portals themselves and their projection to the current player view along a line normal (at 90 degrees) to the player view shown as a light blue outline, along with the "yellow" boxes.

Note that you can use settings like /r_showportals 4, or , 5 ,or 6, but that these seem to just repeat the sequence listed above.
