For the first time in all of MODSCON, we have not received enough entries to complete a contest. We just finished up MODSCON07.2 which was a CoD series mapping contest. By the deadline, we had received only 2 entries plus one late entry the following afternoon.

A week before the contest's end, we asked in the forums for people to respond as to whether or not they would be entering. Based on those responses, we believe there can be no further entries within a weeks time.

The sponsor has asked that we end the contest as planned. However, they will provide those who entered with a consolation prize. Those who entered will be contacted. Those members are:

  • Raaaaa
  • TheModDoctor
Congratulations to those who entered. We will most likely stick to those prizes that result in the most entries and excitement for all future contests.

It's a shame it didn't work out the way we would have liked. But hey, you learn from your mistakes

Congratulations to the guys (or girls) that entered.

Thought I sent my entry in on time unless it was received Oct 1st late. Sent an email with a download link for the entry.
Thanks in advance.

Would have liked to enter. Just didn't have the time to complete.

The prizes for the last Modscon and this Modscon were okay...Not everyone would find these exisitng prizes useful. I personaly wouldn't have utilised either.

I think it would be best to have a longer Modscon like previous years with a hardware and/or software prizes.

If there is an issue of prizes from sponsors.

Have you ever considered an entry fee?

This would provide funds for purchasing prizes! This would also guarantee people would submit something.

Worth considering?

No different from paying to enter a gaming tournament. The movies. Sporting event. Amusement park etc. Except we are creating something!

As I've posted now in another thread. Price would have to be agreed upon. All entrants would get a consolation prize ie Modsonline murchandise.

All prizes would be paid for with entry money.

If anyone commits to paying a fee then they are more serious than someone who doesn't.

Even if entry fee is only $5. Prize 3 of the latest games for 1st 2nd 3rd?

Just something to think about.

I still really like the idea of the contests. I would really have liked to enter but I didn't have the time this time around. In fact I've done little mapping since the one I did enter because it consumed such a large part of my life for a few months that it sort of burned me out.

Whenever CoD4 or Unreal3 modding gets going I'm sure contests aimed at those would be more successful.

@ Eladd

Something similar to this was tried. I think certain competitions were only open to subscribers, so P/P+ members. However I don't think it worked out.

I cant help but think if the competition was operated similar to a squash tournament. I don't know how squash tournements are operated anywhere else in the world. But here is NZ. Every player pays an entry fee which varies from club to club ($10 - $20 usually). We are guaranteed 3 games. All entry money is paid back out as prize money. Based on well you play, you have the oportunity to win back your entry fee plus more. They also have spots prizes.

So if we take this concept. Would that be more appealing to most people. I know if I new I had an oportunity to win back at least my entry fee, if not more. I would enter.

Also, I do wonder it all entries should HAVE to create a competition map/mod project and update it once a week. Just to provide a running comentry on progress. Not necessarily provide any screenshots till later in the competition so other entrants don't copy your idea.

For the purpose of the competition. It should be a map from scratch or have a starter map just like for the Modscon 7.2 that just closed.

When the competition is coming towards the end. Even if the map is not 100% complete. Everyone MUST submit there entry. The competition is not necessary about finishing but about participation.

We as mappers/modders are all at various levels of skill. For new mappers they may feel to intimidated to enter as they now they could not finish a map in time.

All entrys then get judged on style, content, design etc. Once the contest has been officially judged. Prizes awarded. Then anyone who didn't fully complete there map can now try to finish. Then once completed to there satisfaction. Resubmit it to then be uploaded for community download.

There always seems to be alot of activity on this website. If we can promote community involvement from all skill levels. (Just like a squash tournament).

I know for me. Even though I never finished my two maps (that was the reason I never submited. I was under the impression they had to be completed). I still learnt new things. Due to time contraints, I learnt to do some things quicker and easier than how I did them previously.

So even with new mappers. If there was one thing in there map that they did well then they should be comended and praised for it. This promotes creative productivity.

So. Just a few more thoughts/suggestions. Whether anything comes of it...?

Happy mapping.
