Ok well we tried it out. I put the xp installation disk in and it tells me that I can't do that cause its a higher version than I am trying to install.
When you go to install XP, are you offered the option to delete partitions or does it stop you before it gets that far? Otherwise you could delete the partition first and then install XP.

Otherwise the trick is that you have to figure out how to reformat the hard drive without using any windows disks at all.

At this point, I don't have the answer. If PleaseMYOB is reading this, I have heard that he performed this successfully.

I have a feeling that I am going to need to know how to do this. I just got a new laptop with Vista installed. It will be for one of my jobs which isn't related to graphics work. This is why I don't know if I need to reformat just yet.

But I would like to know what I will have to be doing when the time comes.

So if anyone else has any information, it would be appreciated. I will also post if I figure anything out in the mean time.

2 harddrives? install on disk2, and then format disk1 from your working xp... However I don't recall having issues going back to xp from vista with a single drive, either way using the recovery console/safe mode with CMD/get a windows 95-98 startup disk (DOS PWNS) can cover most bases with ease, but I'm not sure if that's your cup of tea...

As a LAST resort, if you set the hard drive to LBA mode (user defined) in the BIOS, it will be limited in size (same if you use fdisk to make a partition, not sure the limit off hand) but should be enough to reformat with xp's installer (which should ditch vista) and then change back to auto ((Auto, HA!, I remember back in my day...........)) and format again with XP...

No access to a win95 boot disk locally, should be able to get one Here

You the man Please!

That's how I did it all those years back. I had a Windows 98 disk. I couldn't remember that.

microsoft wrote a guide for you http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=933168&SD=tech

more info here...i believe server 2003 runs the same partition boot logic as 98 did - though 95 was more stable for a format.

make sure to run a complete (not fast) format to NTFS

another decent utility for wiping the partition is here
