According to a press brief at SIGGRAPH 2007, Microsoft has dropped some disturbing news informaing gamers that the currently available Direct X 10 hardware WILL NOT support the upcoming Direct X 10.1 in Vista’s new SP1, basically declaring all current hardware supporting DX 10 is now obsolete. On a brighter note, Microsoft did state that the updated Direct X add virtually nothing that gamers should care about and adds almost nothing that developers are likely to utilize.

Ok wait a moment...can someone please clarify what I've just read? Let's say i got a pc that runs vista and a 3D graphics card that supports DX10 (like the NVIDIA 8800 series)...does that mean if I update my DX10 version to the 10.1 version, my graphics card will not work? Or does this simply mean that it will work but new features will not be supported by the card?

This all sounds crazy to me....the ending of the full article states: Not only will this update require new hardware, but it leaves current DX 10 hardware holders in a dark, lonely place and requires the update of SP1 for Vista.

So basically a new card will be required? Or will let's say NVIDIA make new drivers available to counter this problem? This is confusing.... [confused]

You be looking at one or two years before dx10.1 game comes out, and it seems as the graphics get better games are taking longer and longer to produce.I'm mean theres what one or two dx10 games out now. By then your computer will be obsolete and it will be time for a new one anyway. And to me it seems as the graphic quality goes up content goes down
so who cares about dx10.1, Id rather play dx9 game with alot content than a pretty dx10 game with no content or several
expansion packs to get a decent game with comtent.

I've just got a 8800GTS - not because of DX10. I'm still running XP for reliability and now all the games I have play as they're meant to - They all operate silky smooth. I'm playing COD2 SP (again) just so I can see how it was really meant to be played! but Dx10...maybe in a years time. I'll be happy playing Crysis in DX9.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard! Vista comes out and is meant for DX10, and new DX10 cards are on the market...but after a few months, these cards are no good anymore with the sp1?? Son of a gun, I guess XP is the way to go....but I'm just wondering if sp1 is really necessary....if an sp2 comes out, will it be he same deal?
