I am currently trying my hand at making a ratz type map with a giant pool table in the middle anyway while I have got the walls up and the top of the table and then when I try to run the map to se how it is working it locks up

where would i look to find out the cause of the lock up

When does it lock up? during play or load or which?
When you compiled your map, did you look for any errors or warnings in the console window?
did you remember to add the correct player spawn point for your gametype?

It is locking up at the portalvis portion of the build process

I beleave the pool table has to many faces and the room is so large that it is causing it to stop responding

Can I seperate the room with a skip texture ? would this help?

You need to simplify or wait. You are saying that it's stopping or slowing during compile. Then you need to wait
You can also try turning the table into a func_static brush.
