ok this is with custom pk3s in the compile folders, but i've tried it with only stock pk3s and the problem is still there

Ok, no need to have -modelshadow and -modelalphashadow switches in there if using the -extra switch.

Just use -extra by itself.

Or if not doing extra then just use these switches,
-modelshadow -sundiffusesamples 3
for a quicker compile with shadows.

I have never used -modelalphashadow and found no need to use it.

modelalphashadow will use the mask layers from tree and bush skins etc to create detailed shadows - works best on rat scale maps or one using -samplesize 16 or less. I don't typically have extra tagged

going to give this one last bump. If it's a clue to anyone I can't get lightingprecalc to work either - whatever xmodel i try to make red, 0.99 0.1 0.1, or anything still ends up with it's natural colouring (worldspawn and entity lights still work though)
