Steve Jobs had his presentation at this year's WWDC event but made a very interesting announcement. We knew that id Software was working on a new game engine, but we didn't expect it to be first announced here.

To answer your first question, no, this is not going to be an Apple game. Jobs said, "We're going to be showing on a Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox at E3, we'll have another Mac announcement at E3."

Engadget has a couple screenshots of the game. These were taken at the press event.  If you scroll down to the 10:13am mark, you will find the screenies and the transcript of what was said.

The id Software website has a quick blurb about it without any screenies.

Brings back memories of what they tried to do with voxels!

With ID developing a racing game they are definatly stepping outside what they are renowned for? Then again this could be just a tech demo? (devinatly looks like a racing game).

If the terrain can be deformed on the fly like they state, then maybe we will finally get realistic dirt track racing/motorcross/rally games - any type of dirt related racing as we would have realtime track deformation.

I guess with time we will find out for sure what this new technology can do.

I thought they ment that the user would be able to "paint the world" basically, like just change the texture of the terrain, i dunno i just scanned through it :p. But i agree real-time physics of dirt movement would be an all time first, racing games would never be the same, as it does to me also look like a racing game.

Video of the even here: Gametrailers.com

Engadget made it read like Steve gave this announcement when in fact it was John Carmack. Watch the video clip of his presentation.
