I have done alot of experimenting with this...so Ill tell you what works/looks good for me...

1 unit = 1 inch

example....average human male is 5'11" tall
...or 71" tall....
so are the models

  1. a character is 71 units tall and 32 units wide.
  2. a player can jump (normally) vertically 32 units high
  3. a crouched player is 56 units tall
  4. a prone player is 32 units tall

you'll notice that i generally use multiples of 4 in my calculations.
Keeping your map simpler and maintaining easy of making brushes match up correctly....when you start playing around in 1 unit increments, you'll find that you spend way too much time editting the gaps and overlaps of your brushes/patches.

to make things appear correctly in perspective use these figure.

  1. walls should be no less than 8 units thick (to reduce 'clipping')
  2. interior doorways should be 96- 104 units tall and 40-48 units wide
  3. floor to ceiling (normal) should be 112-128 units high
  4. Normal stairs have a 12 unit tread and a 8 unit riser
  5. stairs with 8 units deep treads will make noise while crouched
  6. Stairs with 12 units deep treads will not make noise while crouched

I hope this helped to answer some of your questions...
