Hi it's me again,
I got annother question:
How can I assign a new skin to the player I don't want to re-skin parts of the player - I found an entire skin-textures, but where do I hav to put it??

I tell ya, if it wasn't for this book (Quake 4 Mod For Dummies), I wouldn't remember a thing. lol.

You have no choice but to reskin parts of the player. Although the torso with legs and arms is considered one part.

Start by locating which model and skin you want to replace. This is easiest using the model viewer utility. STart the game, open the console and type 'modview'

Say you want to change the multiplayer marine. Select group: player, Entity Definition, layer_marine_mp, skin: none. Now you see a list of the skins used for the different parts of the player. So, take note of which ones you need to hunt down and replace/alter. Those might be:
models/characters/marine/body
models/characters/marine/body_collision
models/characters/marine/eye
models/characters/marine/hair
models/characters/marine/teeth
models/character/marine_heads/kane6
models/characters/marine_heads/head_collision

The above is a list of materials for the model. These materials will tell you what images were used so locate these materials starting in c:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\q4base\materials (this is actually inside pak002.pak which I found by opening each pak file and looking at the paths so you need to open this with winzip).

So scroll down in this pak file and find characters.mtr. (again, a good guess and found by opening various mtr files and reading the contents. part of modding is being a detective). Open this in notepad. press Ctrl+F to find and look for 'models/characters/marine/body'.

Now you will find the list of TGA files that are used to make this model look like Kane. These are the files you must replace. The original TGA files are located in pak003.pk4.

wow thanks that's something to start with - u won't believe how hard it is to find the right tutorial for this...
but I#ve got one image with all the parts on it, does that mean I've to crop out every single piece ?

technically there is another way.
However, this involves working with the model in a modeling program such as maya. Then you would re-skin the model, re-export the model and re-export the mapped image (which looks like this one).

I figured that this method would be much more complicated. I know how to use some modeling programs and it's complicated to me.

yeah i can imagine that - i know some body who knows someone else lol and that guy has Maya and two or three manuals (each has about 200-300 pages) and it's still difficult to him.
Moreover I don't have any modeling programs so...
But thanks again for the help - btw your book's great helps me alot
