Author Topic: Why is it when I'm playing the game gets stuck and makes noises(stuttering) for about 10 secs then resumes. It's happened about 4 times now? Maybe graphics card?

There are several things that can cause games like this to "Stutter" while playing. Make sure you have the latest drivers for you graphics adaptor and for your sound. That one is always the golden rule, but rarely fixes this problem. Mainly because the "Stutter" is being caused by your computer accessing you hard drive.
I ended up with the problem while playing first person shooters and about tore my hair out trying to figure out what the problem was. Here is what fixed mine:
My computer has 2 hard drives. A small little 13 GB one and a 120 GB. I had the small one set up as the master with my Windows XP installed on it. All my games were installed on the larger 120 GB slave drive.
At first I figured that defragging both drives would take care of the problem, that the game was having to search the hard drive too much for files, and that this would cause the game to stutter or slow down. While this is true, it did not fix the problem.
Turns out that even though the game "engine" is running the program, it still has to use and talk to Windows XP to run correctly. My games were having to talk to the Windows operating system on the smaller hard drive, that was old and had a much longer access time. This was causing the came to do the stuttering thing, especially when loading levels or special events during the game.
I decided to reinstall Windows on my larger hard drive, that way the games and the operating system were all on the same drive.
All my problems went away like magic. No stutter, pauses and the such. Even though my motherboard and CPU were very fast, lots of memory, and a very good graphics card, the whole thing was being slowed down by a old hard drive that just couldn't keep up.
Hope this helps you.
