Hey,

In this tutorial, I will cover the basics on how to make a simple house. I am hoping that you a familiar with clipping as there is quite alot to do, so if not i suggest you look at the 3 point clipping tutorial before you try this. Also, i apologise for any thing you do not understand or is worded in a stupid way, I didnt know how to explain some things :)

Anyway, on with the show...

1)Draw out a caulk brush, mines 8 units high, 384 in width and length.

2) Draw out walls 96 units high on top of the floor brush.

3) This will act as our bottom floor and walls.

4) Next, switch the XY FRONT view and insert an actor, place him touching the floor brush.

5) Select the brush hes infront of and clip around him, 1 unit to the sides and 2 above which should leave something like this.

6) Delete the brush you clipped out and you should have something like this. It will be your basic doorway.

7) Next we will do the same for windows, 2 on each wall but only one on the wall with the door in. The mesurements for the windows 5 units wide and 5 units tall. The windows bottom edge is touching the top of the fourth unit. After youve done this, you should have something like this.

Now switch back to the XY TOP view.

This is only going to be a one story house, but as we go on, you will learn all the tehcniques you need to use for a two story house. Its basicly the same but with some stairs and some more walls, the roof will be done in the same way.

Carrying on...

8) Every House needs a ceiling, so, lets do ours. Left click on the floor brush and click the space bar, this will duplicate the brush, once you have done that, like the brush up with the floor and move it up to the top of the walls so its resting on the top.

9) Now we have our ceiling, lets move onto the roof,

Select the ceiling brush, duplicate it. Switch to the XY SIDE view again and press the 'R' button (this is rotate) and move you mouse down slowly until you see the roof move twice into round about a 45 degree angle. Then, move the brush so it is in a 'roof like' posistion.

10) Now duplicate the brush you just made and move it into the opposite possistion on the other side of the house, you should end up with two brushes intersecting one another.

11) Now we will clip the roof so that we have a proper looking roof. You will need to deselect the "toggle snap to grid" icon before clipping the roof. You should end up with something like this.

12) Now we need to create the wall that is underneath the roof, youll see what I mean. 'Re Toggle' the snap ro grid icon and draw out a brush covering the roof.

13) Now you have done that you will need to clip this brush to fit nicely into the open space, youll see what I mean. Deselect the toggle to grid icon and clip the wall like this.

14) Re toggle the snap to grid icon and de select the clipper, then switch to XY TOP view, duplicate the brush you just made and move it into the opposite possition on the roof.

15) Ok, we are nearly done now, all thats left to do is edit the roof a bit to make it look realistic, ok, select the roof brushes, and move the edges above were you just made the previous two brushes out 2 units so that they look realistic.

Also,

Some clipping of the ceiling brush had to be done, but anyone can figure out were and, why, it pokes out of the roof a tiny bit.

So,

I Hope youve enjoyed my tutorial :) Its my way of giving back to you guys what you guys have given back to me.

Atchully insted of imageshack. Use photobucket, register and login. You can upload like 10 images at once then theres an image link under each photo. You just put that link in the forums and then its a full image. ITS free also!

Nice tutorial. Though personally I don't use rotate to make a roof, I use the clipper tool.

Instead of the rotate tool just use the edge tool... Much tidier because you dont get overlapping brushes & the roof will always align with the grid... That way getting other brushes to line up with it is simple & you wont have to worry about the roof going out of shape or anything when resizing or moving it...

Not bad, but I think you should always make your roof ON the grid and clip ON the grid, & NEVER turn clip to grid off.

Iv'e found the easiest and quickest way to make roofs is by using simple meshes, no clipping needed and if you like you can induce a little sag in the roof for that old worn down look :)

Another tip, NEVER go below grid unit 2 if you can, when working on other maps to help people out they have gone down to 1 grid unit and had millions of holes everywhere that needed tweeking to get portals sealed up, it's very hard when everything is 1 grid unit spaced.
