In FLARE Why does:

0..1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9<<
Take so god damn long?!?!

My map isnt even that big! Lots of patches tho!

Lots of patches means lots of compiling needs to be done.

the speed depends on the complexity of your map (brushes AND patches) and your computer (processor speed and memory mostly)

So if I do more alpha blending, will this affect the compile time? Is there any mapping method known to take a long time to compile?

everything you add to a map, increases the compile time basically.

use -fast when doing the vis compile. it only takes a few minutes. i read somewhere that iw compiled the final versions of the cod maps using fast vis compile. i don't know if this is true, but i have done normal vis compiles and -fast compiles and there is no difference that i can see in the fps or general performance. it will cut you compile down from a day to 10 minutes. use -fast flare too when doing quick compiles for testing. i wouldn't recommend useing -extra flare in the final version as it tends to bleach all the colours. i don't know why, just that it looks bad.

For testing you can use a fast compile.. but for your final release compile do a full compile.

IW did it like that too... a fast compile generates alot more data being send between the server and the client. A full compile alot less.. so you ALWAYS do a full compile on your final MP maps.. on an SP map it's not needed, because the server and client are the same computer.
