After spending several days with stomach-flu-like conditions, I went to the doctor last week, and was sent to the ER to recieve treatment for dehydration. They admitted me to the ICU, where I was informed that I had a blood sugar level of 650, and that normally people should be between 70 and 120. My pancreas decided to shut down, I am now a type-one diabetic. I was trapped in the hostpital for almost four days, I recieved more blood draws and injections than I ever have before; and this is just the beginning of a life-changing process. I just got out of the hospital a few hours ago, and now must start my carb-counting, and insulin injecting.

Right now I feel good, and I have a lot of support from my family and friends, i'm pretty well on the mend, but te damage seems done. It could be worse, I'm lucky I got medical attention in time.

It's just amazing how fast some things can change. A week ago my biggest worry was trying to decide where to buy my Christmas tree...

While I sit here, trying to think of something encouraging to say, I'm reminded of someone I know who has type one diabetes.  I think back 100 years ago where such people would be dead.  I think forward in 100 years where such people won't need a life-time of treatments.  There is little I can type here on this forum that isn't already said.

Things change.  Sometimes it's for the best, sometimes it's not.  Some people say it's the result of destiny or the will of a divine being.  To me, such things happen simply because they happen.  You can trace back the paths that interweave to form the event to happen, but it's a futile effort.  Hindsight is 20/20 but foresight is a blur.  One simply must accept that which they cannot change or change that which they cannot accept.  Either choice will create new paths that wind and weave in the tapestry of fate until it reaches it's final end.  Never despair nor curse anyone for there is no fault, no blame, and no path backwards.  Simply press on and know that your lucky you can live.

Good luck mate!  Bad news indeed...  I'm borderline diabetes #2 myself.  Had to change my diet to avoid it as long as I can.  Lost 20 lbs in the process, in about 3 weeks.  Should lose another 40-50 in the coming months...

650!?!?!?!?!?

####! You should be happy to be alive! At that level, it's your brain who could have shut down.

Hope you feel better.

I don't think type 2 diabetics have to take insulin shots.  I think there's a pill instead.

Type 1 is usually the result of an auto-immune reaction (ie you're anti-bodies attack your pancreas) Type 2 is lard ass diabetes (ie you sit in front of your computer all day an play WoW and never see the light of day for weeks, and no not just being ultra inactive is not the only cause, you also have to have a genetic predisposition as well though type 1 has a genetic predisposition as well, so if you got diabetes chances are someone in your family does aswell)

Yeeesh is right.   Hang in there.

What's the difference between type 1 and type 2?

Type 1 is usually the result of an immunodeficient reaction (ie you're anti-bodies attack your pancreas) Type 2 is lard ass diabetes (ie you sit in front of your computer all day an play WoW and never see the light of day for weeks, and no not just being ultra inactive is not the only cause)

I stand corrected.
