Seems like it'd be easier and safer to just back the files up a traditional way...  (if you have access to a DVD burner or external HD)

If I backup the root song files, will all the file information that I entered in itunes (including album covers) be backed up with it?

Unless the IPod is crappier than even I give it credit for, all that info should be stored in the ID3 tag embeded in the MP3 file.

But the album covers aren't going to be in the ID3 tag though... right? I spent far too much of my life organizing every single song on my computer, and I don't want to have to do it over.

ml_ipod supports album covers in ID3v2 tags...  Then again, I don't use it since I don't look at the ipod when it's playing...

All my album covers are stored in the ID3 tags.  Depends how your program did it...
