I'm leaving this morning for a week.  Since I'm considering moving to the Seattle area anyway, I thought taking my vacation up there could give me an idea of cost of living and the like.  Don't know if I'll have internet access, but I'm bringing my camera, so I'll post pictures at least when I get back.  See ya!

My media-saturated impression of Seattle is an amalgam of old-growth forest, Starbucks locations, and grunge.

I will therefore give you 500 Quatloos if you can get a picture of a Kurt-Cobain-like figure serving coffee in a Starbucks with visible trees or tree-themed decor, thus reinforcing my faith in TV once again.

And....go!

I swear, my first thought upon reading this thread's title was a horrified "Why?"  Not, "Oh, that's interesting, what are you going to do while you're up there," but "Sweet merciful monkey lord, why would you do that to yourself?"  I think it's because my impression of Seattle is similar to mabman's.

All the old growth forests within 100 miles of Seattle were clear cut about 100 years ago.  It's all second growth now.

There are a lot of Starbucks.  There are 4 or 5 within a mile of my house (but I am near a mall).  However, there are also a dozen other coffee shops, a few Thai restaurants, an Indonesian restaurant, 2 Ethoipian restaurants, a Mosque...  It's not so "mono-cultural".

Grunge?  The only remanants of grunge in Seattle is the art installations called 'Soundgarden" that Soundgarden named themselves after.  It's in Magnuson Park.

Weird time of year to come to Seattle.   It gets dark at like 4:30 and it's cold and wet.   September is best - hot and dry.

Anyways - have fun!

Interesting - sounds almost like where I am (western Canadian prairie) - except no real forests to speak of (there are trees, of course), it's not really "wet" in the winter as such, just cold, and there's a slightly lower concentration of coffee shops (although Tim Horton's is making a valiant effort at increasing that :) ).

Trip is awesome so far.  But the people here can't drive in snow.  There's snow falling, but not sticking to the ground.  Not even cold enough to freeze into substantial slush.  But I saw a guy putting chains on his tires!  I couldn't help myself, I bust out laughing!  I don't think the guy was very happy with me, but I was one the other side of the road, so he couldn't really do anything about it.

I forgot my cable for my camera, or I'd upload some photos.  First one I took was with some Korean Air stewardesses, just to tweak Agent.  :p

And how often does Sleepless in Seattle play here?  I've already seen it on TV twice in three days!
