Considering he'd fallen from the ceiling twice, once right onto glass bottles, I very much doubt he'd have been able to manage much of a getaway even if he hadn't given up. He would have been pretty badly injured.

Those metal shelves have to hurt too, the shelves are not flat. They have raised parts, they have brackets that fit into a metal rack that is quite solid.
