After many months of analysis paralysis and peering at web pages, I pulled the trigger and bought an 07 Outback XT.   I was looking at the Honda CR-V, Rav4, Acura RDX and Outback wagon.  The Outback was just the right balance of utility, fun, comfort, quality and airbags.

Here's how I weeded out the others and decidedc on the Outback.

2nd place: CR-V - very nice and tight construction.  I love the Honda engines.  Family friendly value leader of the bunch - $26.5k for the 4WD EX-Leather.  Rode real nice but it was definitely targeted (and sized) for a 30 something woman (as per Honda's own marketing folks).  Lots of road noise on the highway.  It was as loud as my wife's '91 Integra... *rumble, rumble, rumble..*  Great engine and great handling but this one lost me on size, comfort and noise.  Little weak on the mid-life crisis quotient - could use a few more horsepower.

3rd Place: RDX - this is a one *expletive deleted* nice ride.  My *expletive refering to rear end deleted* was never happier in a cow clad throne.  It was a rock solid drive with a beautiful, well laid out interior.  The stereo was real nice too.  Downside - too touchy - about the same HP at the Outback but tuned too aggressively.  I was constantly fighting to keep it at legal speed.  Tad too expensive too.   The final price I was quoted was around $32.5k +TTL.  If they had only dug a bit deeper.   They are piling up at area dealers.  I really wanted a Honda product but they wouldnt budge...  My *expletive refering to rear end deleted* will miss you RDX. *sniff* :(

4th place: Rav4 - Rock solid drivetrain.  It drove pretty good - bit boundy and bouncy.   The engine (V6) was the most powerful of the bunch.  Cheap interior.  Squishy cloth seats.  Flimsy controls and a weird two level dash layout.  Design motto:  "When in doubt, put some more plastic with a cool looking angle on it".   No lights in the glove box(es) but lights to illuminate your feet while you drive.   :s6:   This interior was your friend's girlfriend's friend.  You know, the one you would never consider dating, would never had caught your eye, but your friend's girlfriend thought you'd be good together (and she felt sorry for her friend).   If I had bought it, I might have fun for a bit but then I'd be looking for ways to let her down easy after a little while.

Buying a car is real nerve wracking... Now I need to count my leftover pennies so I can afford the kitchen remodel we are doing (before bringing home the girl we are adopting...).

She was born 8/24 and we are in the courts now... gotcha day is anywhere from a month to 6+ months away.   How's that for stressful due date?  :O

PS  Once things are more final, I'll share pics and stuff...

Congrats on the car.  I liked the CRV, and we settled on a RAV4 ('06).  It is loud.
I now own my dad's old '97 CRV, so it doesn't really matter to me.  But I agree that Hondas rock.

Adoption?  Did I miss a thread somewhere, or is this all a clever euphemism I'm not getting?
