http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6102690.stm

turns out the reason NASA wanted to let it die in the first place was because of a Policy of Fear 'safety policy' for shuttle astronauts, which stated that the international space station had to be used as a safe haven for all future launches in case of damage to the heat shield on launch (ie: the policy said that the astronauts would just stay on the space station until they get rescued).  but the shuttle doesn't carry enough fuel to move between orbits, from the space station to the telescope, so the telescope was out of reach; if they launched a shuttle directly to the telescope's orbit,  there'd be nowhere for the astronauts to stay while NASA preps a rescue shuttle,  because the space station is in a lower orbit.

their solution is to prep two missions at the same time and have the rescue shuttle ready to go on a moments notice.
(seems pretty simple. I wonder why nobody thought of it before :old8:)

so now Hubble is being repaired afterall.

-=cheers=-

Because it is too simple an idea. They were looking for a complex solution instead of something simple.

This is good news for Hubble, means it shall be working till it gets replaced.

Yeah, when I heard this I was ecstatic.  Hubble owns and I'd hate for it to just let die.

Prepping a shuttle isn't nearly as expensive as launching it.  Remember, the fuel is the most costly part and it isn't wasted if it's not used.

This is great news, although I'm sure people in the scientific community are alot more elated that me.

...and who ever said being an astronaut was supposed to be safe?

Nobody, but that doesn't mean you take unnecessary risks.

But yeah, this is really good news.
