does anybody know a free program to convert avi files to mpeg? all the apps i can find cost ~30$

As far as I know there is no free MPEG2 encoder. MPEG1 I believe there are some. A good help maybe this site: http://www.videohelp.com

download mplayer from
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

then open a command prompt, cd to the installation and you can use mencoder to transcode the avi to mpg

ie: for test.avi

Code Sample

mencoder -oac lavc -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd -vf scale=720:576,harddup -srate 48000 -af avcresample=48000 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=9800:vbitrate=5000:keyint=15:acodec=ac3:abitrate=192:aspect=16/9 -ofps 25 -o test.mpg test.avi

Dont post your email on a web forum like that. leave spaces in between and dont use the @ symbol. As I have done a test on http://quake3world.com/ and found bots that look trough forums pick those emails up and spam you like crazy. just a thought.

On another Forum I got into trouble with a mod because I put my unedited email address on board, at least he explained why (being new). They have a policy that says that they do not discuss mod type decisions. I did a quick google, and no freeware AVI to Mpeg2 .

There is no freeware that I have found. As stated before, www.VideoHelp.com is awesome. If you look through there and find a program that does numerous things for like $30 - maybe it's worth it!

tmpgenc can be used unlimitedly for mpeg1 encoding, but the mpeg2 encoding expires after 30 days. So if you're looking for mpeg1 that's an option, but for mpeg2, I have no idea mainly because there's nothing free for mpeg2.
