Alright, sorry for the rule breakage of the last thread.

Here's the first post from that thread, slightly edited.
Quote
Alright, so here's the whole story.

I installed Splinter Cell Chaos theory which has starforce.

the game crashed to the blue screen twice during setup but while playing it was fine.

after playing I used the starforce removal tool.

Then I played Oblivion for a while with no problems.

today I pop in oblivion, play for about 10 mins then it crashes, thing is, this ain't a normal crash.
I hear the sound stick so I know it crashed but no blue screen. then I notice that my monitorbehaving as if my pc is turned off (the orange light rather than green was on)

I restarted my PC but my monitor, mouse, keyboard, all that stuff is not getting any signal. as if the pc was turned off.
I checked all the plugs. opened it up and checked the powersupply to make sure everything was still plugged in.

There are no problems that I can see.

When I turn on my PC the HD light and the lights on the drives appear to act normal.

I recently installed a new DVD burner so I unplugged that and then after turning my PC on the monitor light turned green but nothing came up on the screen.
then the light went back to orange, then to green then it stayed on orange.

then after unplugging my other DVD drive the monitor light stayed green but still nothing on the screen.

wtf.

Help me please.

To answer Para's question, no there are no beeps or errors at all.

I tried each stick of memory, one by one, in the first slot but still got nothing.
so I guess that means they're all blown or my CPU is right?

What do you think the chances of success are in me replacing the CPU rather than getting a whole new MOBO?

A few months ago I got a new video card, nvidia 6800GT.
it's an agp card and I talked with yall about the advantages of getting a new MOBO with a PCIe slot and PICe card and it just ended up being a better deal to just get the best agp card I could and save the PCIe for later.
So if I get a new MOBO I really want to get the same or as close as possible to what I have so that reletivly new purchase won't go to waste, unless of course if it's blown too.
And, I've still got my old ATI card at home so I can trade it out to see if that makes any difference.

Is the best way to see if thay 6800 is blown to just put in in another machine?

If your 6800 was fried the PC would go berserk with beeps... So it's not that...  But yeah, trying it in another PC would give you a definitive answer...  And the probability that both of your MEM sticks go out at the same time is very unlikely...  If I had to guess, I'd say it's your MOBO...

Just for clarification, when you say it's the MOBO, could it be the entire MOBO or just the proccessor?

[off topic]
is it just me or does it feel really silly saying 'MOBO'?
It's a great abriviation but as I read the sentence in my head, the word 'MOBO' just sounds so silly.
[/off topic]

I understand that replacing the proccessor is a risky task, but I'm wondering if it might not be worth the risk considering the likelyhood of a new mobo not accepting my current memory sticks and such.
Thoughts?

Sounds like the MOBO to me too.  And that'd be the whole thing.  You may be able to find a north/south bridge from another one, but swapping them would be a huge pain.

What kind of RAM do you use now?  As long as it's a 184 pin DIMM, it should be pretty universally accepted.

If I were you I'd try to swap CPUs with another system to test your CPU/MOBO.  Or you could just buy a CPU/MOBO combo that fits your current case and power supply.  Those can be pretty cheap, especially if you don't want top-o-the line.

what is top of the line these days?
Mine is a 2.8 pentium.

My MOBO is just what came with my dell 4600, what do I need to know to search for one that will fit everything?

You should be able to find a board that'll work based on the following information: size/type of RAM (pin number, DDR, etc), CPU socket (if you're going to keep you current processor, if not, this doesn't really matter), AGP or PCI express, powersupply type (ATX, etc), board size ("baby ATX" or "micro ATX" are just a couple).  You can probably google a part number off the current board and get most (if not all) of this information.

I think the CPU might be fried. when motherboards die they start acting funky for a while first. there are to many things that can wig-out on a motherboard without actually preventing it from booting. if it was the motherboard you probbly would have noticed odd things happening for a while first (at least that what happened with mine).

if you need a cheap motherboard for your AGp card  try ASUS A8V-MX S939.
you'll need to buy an athlon XP to go with it

what kind of RAM do you have right now?

I've got 4 sticks of 256 PC3200.

What odd things did yours do?
I always seem to notice quirks now and then but 8 times out of 10 I could attribute it to something.

wow.
Well, would you still call it risky knowing that I've never done it before nor have any real clue as to how it's done or have and idea of how to even get the heat sink off?

but seriously, if I could just get a new CPU and avoid doing the whole MOBO thing it would be great.

And after a quick google of the 'ASUS A8V-MX S939' it looks like from the screenshots that it only has 2 ram slots. and I'm sitting here with 4 sticks of ram, and after spending a year with a gig of ram, 512 ain't gonna cut it.
