"The 300 Spartans" was a classic movie from 1962. I have it on DVD, it is about the battle of Sparta (helping Athens) to defend against a much larger persian army. I wonder if Frank Miller got the concept from that, eventhough it is a well known historical fact. [edit] after reading the imdb for 300, it really does come from that movie/occassion. I quote "Our arrows will blot out the sun" and "Then we will fight in the shade" are direct quotes from the 1962 classic. Great movie, you should rent it/buy it, very cheap nowadays.
